Movie Review: Boys N the Hood The film ‘Boys N the Hood’ depicts many societal issues and aspects in urban planning like environment, education, violence, urban slums and culture of urban settings. These issues always form strong pillars of the society in which we live and are always a challenge to people especially the youth in urban settings. The film demonstrates how urban planning and social networking in the urban environments have importance and side effects to the youth and family; it depicts the influence of modernity on urban space.

Also depicted in the film are socio-cultural differences and their effects in social networking and family ties. This essay discus the urban planning issues drawing illustrations from the film ‘Boys N the hood.’ Separate parenting can have negative effects to a child upbringing. A child can involve in bad company and get out of control of one parent. Tre’s woes begin after he gets into a fight in school and her mother sends him to his father in south central los angels neighbored. While his mother thinks fears for his future and sends him to his dad, expecting him to develop respect towards one another it is no surprise that Tre gets into a fight in the same day of his arrival.

Urban environments and neighborhoods have a history of social influence and networking challenge to young adults. Like shown in the film Tre meets his old friends and are downed into peer influence. The urban environments like the one depicted in the film where crime is the order of the day especially among youths therefore requires caution, otherwise one might spend more time behind the bars than in normal life (singleton et.al 1992). Tre meets his old boys and they all get into fight at the same time.

His dad chases a criminal and a black police officer treats him in an unrespectable way and it a gang that brings Ricky’s ball to Tre. All these are clear indications of the many criminal activities in the vicinity. Tre and his friend have a challenge of peer influence, maintaining their social connection as friends and surviving within the harsh environment. Urban slums at times may lead youths to have a challenge of pursuing education to completion due to lack of good role models. These youths after dropping out of school join street gangs, and involve in other street violence and criminal activities but regret later in life.

The film ‘Boys N the hood’ shows a neighborhood where youths aimlessly drop out of school to join their fellows in the streets. The film depicts Doughboy one of Tre’s friends as street-smart young man who lives by stealing from the neighborhood stores (singleton et.al 1992). Doughboy spends seven years in jail but he is just a representative of the numerous young men who spend most of their time in jail. The slum-street life of these youths after dropping out of school is full of crime and violence.

It is difficult to control this because of the lack of mentorship as the children grow up but as they become full adults, they realize their mistakes and begin regretting as all the three boys begin to show desire of continuing with education. Gun violence is a bad impression; it is both destructive and lethally deadly. However, you cannot tell the people of Tre’s neighborhood such a statement not unless you have dug your grave. It is even illegal to own guns but in slums, you do not want to know where they get the guns.

To them guns are like baby toys that you can point at anyone’s forehead carelessly (singleton et.al 1992). They play with the gun but as the say goes “when you live with the sword you die by the sword” so do they. The film shows how the blacks America–California have developed a gun violence culture where street gangs involve guns in almost all their activities. Streets are full of guns and gangs operate with guns. It is guns and guns everywhere even in the bedroom of Tre’s father. Both Tre’s friends die by the gun.

In such cases, youths have a challenge of avoiding such gun companies especially when it is the order of the day like in the film. The environment does not favor them due to bad influence form the neighborhood because however much they may want to avoid it they have to come to it as Tre finds himself holding his father’s gun. The film envelopes all the bad influence, bad neighborhood, criminal involvement and bad youth environment with a family care and support (singleton et al. 1992). To a youth with clear conscience they may fail to see it at present but sees it when the time comes.

In fear of her son’s future, Tre’s mother sends him to his father oblivious of the youth environment that his son is directing to. The film also shows Furious (Tre’s father) trying to mould his son into a good man, teaching him about manhood and sexuality. He shows concern when he asks Tre if he used condom in his fast sex encounter. Furious also secures a job for Tre and together with Tre’s savings plans to support him to college. Even though it is difficult to survive in such a setting, with family care and clear conscience nothing can impede one from securing his desire.

From the beginning to the end with all the characters, the film director relates his story to the real urban world. It is a show of the urban youthful life of dating, drinking, crime, violence and always planning a mischief. Ricky presents an all-American boy with football jersey, football in his hands and football on TV, occasionally drinking milk from a carton. He is well-behaved but less academic oriented depicting school as a means of playing football. Just like the normal current urban boy, he is also easily influenced.

Doughboy presents the urban slum gangster, with liquor, gun and mistrust towards authority. Tre is the responsible and ambitious advocate of change with a successful relationship. Therefore, the film is a presentation of the world, the urban slums in different dimensions; of same people in the same environment, within the same neighborhood but with different perspectives towards life (Singleton et al 1992).
