The proxemics between Maverick and his friend show a high level of intimacy since Maverick treated Goose as his best friend and only remaining family. The camera angle is of a high level at first, then slowly pans down a bit although it doesn’t come exactly at eye level. Lighting used is normal daylight, and the composition is slightly oriented diagonally towards the right. The motif used is the sea with Goose and Maverick in their pilot uniforms – somehow contrasting but actually congruent with their being Naval pilots.
This scene is essential in that it captures the heart of the movie – the true nature of the main character, how he values friendship, the risk, and inevitability of sacrifice in this profession, the guilt and depression that can be caused by mistakes that may or may not be within one’s control.
