Introduction

Leadership in any aspect is considered as a practical skill as well as a research area that involves the ability of an individual to lead or guide teams, or entire organization towards achieving a common goal. An effective leader is one who has the ability to utilize various leadership skills and traits to lead or guide a team towards a achieving a set of objective. Leadership involves dedication and commitment as well as goo interpersonal skills with other individuals. Leaders must possess exceptional communication skills. Teams require motivation to keep on pressing towards achieving their targets, therefore a good leader should have the capacity of motivating their followers. The present paper aims at examining attitudes towards leadership and the influences emanating from social circumstances. The fully understand the concept of leadership, the paper will analyze some of the prominent leaders in tourism and hospitality industry on how their leadership styles inspire the general understanding about leadership. Some of the leaders that will focused on include, Ms, Claire Chiang, Miss Cathy Chu, Philp Schaetz, Mr Richard Hatter and Ms Monica Lee-Muller.

Claire Chiang

Claire Chiang, the Co-Founder and the Senior Vice President of Banyan Tree from a leadership perspective could be seen to present a unique outlook on the various ways through which one could apply purpose in order to driver performance. Such leadership trait of driving performance is evident on how she led the creation and evolution of the Banyan Tree brand. Claire has always been razor sharp on achieving her goals, for that reason she has resourcefully steered the board room and reared the trend on females’ hires at management level.

An effective leader is one who performs their roles and duties with dedication and commitment. Moreover, a leader should always work together with the other whole slew of quiet leaders who play a significant role in making the decisions to be executed. Therefore, as a leader one should collaborate with other staff personnel within the organization as well as creating and upholding an organization’s culture. That way, the top leader can easily facilitate the other quiet leaders within the organization to come forward and conduct their responsibilities as expected.

Claire has 41 hotels in the chain. As the senior vice president, she listens to the chief. In addition, she also pays attention to her directors out in the field for they are closer to the ground than her. A good leader should be able to apply transformation leadership theory in their practice. The theory advocates for a person, leader, to interact with others and be in a position of establishing solid relationship that could lead to high percentage of trust. It is from the created trust that motivation, both intrinsic and extrinsic will be increased for both the leader and their followers. Claire appears to apply this leadership theory by listening to her directors, which has created a solid relationship founded on trust. By engaging the directors in an active communication, where they get to air out their views, they end up feeling motivated. Moreover, according to Claire, the organization brings leaders together where they have training session, and get to share the big and small pictures regarding the organization’s goals.

Miss Cathy Chu

Cathy Chu is the commissioner for tourism Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government. She assumed this leadership post and role in December 2014. A leadership position entails different role such as formulation of policies and strategies on tourism development. She is also responsible for planning and management of the implementation of tourism projects. Before assuming this role in 2014, she had previously served in various bureau and departments. Some of those were responsible for the education and manpower, trade and security policies. Administrative region government and the associated ministries central people’s government, play the roles of promoting economic and trade relations between Hong Kong and the mainland. Therefore, for Miss Cathy to successfully manage her leadership position she requires to be equipped with various leadership traits and theories.

The first most applicable leadership theory that Cathy Chu uses is the contingency theories of leadership. The theory argues that there exists no distinct method to effectively organize an organization or lead a company as well as making informed decisions. Therefore, as a leader one should not be confined to a specific way of leading, making decisions or organizing. A leader should be diversified in nature and open to suggestions. Such applies to when leading a team to executing any task.

Philp Schaetz

Philp Schaetz is the head of sales for Marco polo Hotels. He headed the sales department of one of the fastest growing hotel portfolios in Asia. He is well equipped for the post because of his vast experience of 17 years in global hospitality. Other than his experience Philip graduated from the University of Las Vegas, Nevada with a bachelor of Arts degree in Hotel Administration. His education background in business administration provides makes a reliable and efficient leader in the hospitality industry. Some of the skills that Philip assimilated during the course of his degree in business administration include having a proactive personality accompanied by positive attitude that helps him think outside the box. The ability to see beyond the current situation makes it easy for him to handle the problems that come his way in his career. Philip spent about 16 years with Hyatt Hotels Corporation and has been a senior management officer in various organizations. Phillip is an expertise in sales, distribution and revenue management. He is also known for his excellent expertise in brand development. Through sales training Philip has acquired several leadership skills that have developed him through his career. For instance, as he gained interpersonal skills combined with technical skills that help him as a leader to have a customer-focused selling approach. Moreover, Philip is a quick leaner, a good an effective should learn from the immediate surroundings and always be attentive on what goes around their working space. A good leader should be result driven, a trait that is evident with Philip. He is described as a result-driven global sales and marketing executive who has explicit entrepreneurial spirit, as well as excellent organizational skills. It is from the combination of all these skills and leadership managerial traits that Philip is the head of the sales for Marco Polo Hotels.

Mr Richard Hatter

Richard is the general manager of Hotel ICON. He is the founder of Epsilon Real Estate partners limited. His position makes him responsible for managing all the projects of Epsilon. Moreover, he also oversees for the corporate development and any business opportunities that present themselves in the market. A significant leadership responsibility of Richard is the fact that he is the owner and director of Brooksplace Ltd. This is a private property development and investments firm that specializes in London centric residential and commercial property and planning profiling.

Richard is known for the unequivocal brand statement, which is a unique identity system. Richard is a creative leader, which is evident from the vision that he formulated at Hotel ICON. Richard has managed to establish one of the world’s first fully integrated commercial and research hotel. From this leadership trends and activities exhibited by Richard it is clear that a good and effective leader should be creative and innovative. Moreover, one could also conclude that a leader should always be focused on their career and always thrive to achieve their goals. Given the fact that Richard is creative in nature, it implies that he observes and learns from his environment. Which explains why he came up with another brand statement as a strategy of capturing a wider market in the industry.

Ms Monica Lee-Muller

She is the head of Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre. Monica strongly believes that her passion and love for interacting with people as well as her ability to win over the trust of others have made a great leader. Before becoming the head of Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre she previously held the position of deputy managing director. She has over 17 years of experience in her career, a time which has given her an opportunity to lead a team to securing multiple world renowned exhibitions and conventions. A good leader should be able to work effectively with other team members to achieve a common goal. A good leadership trait one can learn from Monica is that a leader who has been a part of a successful team is most probably to build good teams because they get acquitted with knowledge of what to look. Working with a successful team constitutes an important part in the learning experience of any leader. Monica has demonstrated that one important tasks of being a leader is to have the ability to put together a good team as well as supporting the team members in achieving a common goal and doing their best.

Monica definitely loves her job. A good leader should be passionate of what they do as it will act as a source of motivation for the other members. Monica describes how she loves the industry and how she was fortunate in joining the hotel sector. With respect to Monica’s style of leadership, a good leader should interact with other people as it helps learn and realize other aspects of leadership that cannot be acquired though academic qualifications. Monica reveals that one of the primary reasons why she loves to interact with people particularly in the hotel industry is that she gets to learn and gain vast experience on how to handle clients and other work personnel.

In summary, with respect to the presented bibliography of the above leaders in tourism and hospitality industry one can conclude that a leader requires to have vast experience on how to handle clients and other work personnel. Moreover a leader should be able to put together a good team as well as supporting the team members in achieving a common goal and doing their best. With respect to the research on the above leaders, one could learn that the most significant element or feature about leaders is the ability to create enthusiasm, empower other people as well as instilling confidence and inspiring those around them. One could apply the element of remaining intellectually curious and committed towards learning which is evident among all the leaders. A good leader as seen from the analysis of the named leaders, is always looking for new ideas, therefore in life one should always be inquisitive and seek out for people who might inform them or give them an advantage.
