Dubai What was the original impetus for tourism or hotel development, as derived from or according to development theories of tourism why’ and ‘interpretations’)? The development of tourism has been given wide significance for the past twenty years by industries and governments because of their belief that the promotion of tourism industry can root out poverty and increase national income of the nation. Tourism has become one of the largest businesses that plays a vital role in achieving the social and economic aims of a State. Rohan Gawande and Sudhir Dethe states that; “It is a composite of service providers, both public and private, which includes travel agents and tour operators; air, rail and sea transportation operators; guides; owners of hotels, guest houses and inns, restaurants and shops; etc.” (Gawande & Dethe, 2008, p.210). The dependency theory deems tourism as an industry that is developed by the developed countries in the developing countries to perpetuate the dependency of the developing countries. Through analyzing the growth of world tourism, one can understand the fact that the rate of tourism development is influenced by economic changes, corporate dominance and pressures of demographic changes. Global institutions and agencies play a vital role in the process of tourism development. The module examines some key concepts in social sciences which may be applied to the study of tourism and development. It covers a range of key concepts and definitions, and pays attention to a number of principal, theoretical and conceptual frameworks which have been deployed in the analysis of tourism and its development. Theories concerning core-periphery relations are considered alongside dependency theory, modernization theory and its critics. Social and political development is considered alongside spatial and economic models, with attention given to the deployment of tourism to achieve national state projects, and its role in the mobilization and development of civil society. The articulation of tourism and heritage with national and ethnic forms of identification is given theoretical consideration and explored through case studies. The module explores ethical and moral issues in relation to tourism and development, with particular attention to gender, social justice, the environment, and the effects of cultural and environmental commoditization through tourism. It also discusses customer satisfaction and the integration of national and international tourists. It also mentions that the people who have worked in different tourism field are concerned in meeting the different interests and needs of domestic and international travelers. 2. What were the principal dilemmas faced in your example? Hotel business is a cyclical one, its development based on many factors concerned with the economy and international security. Dubai is an important business city and the centre of international trade. Many hotel groups are working in Dubai city and they attract people from all over the world. Crowne Plaza Hotel Dubai is one of the international hotel groups in Dubai. Located beside Sheikh Zayed Road and 15 minutes from Dubai International Airport, Crowne Plaza Dubai is one of the most centrally-located five-star hotels. This group works in a key site of Dubai with international standard and keeps healthier income. A staff of this hotel spoke in twenty two languages with great hospitality. But often the existence of the hotel business is questioned due to different reasons. “A given hotel’s profitability and value depend on many factors, however. In the 1980’s, more than half of U.S. hotels were built or refinanced at high values with corresponding high debt burdens.” (Butler, et al., n.d). It reveals that a long profitable term is necessary for a hotel business group to release from the burden of investment.  Many consider that the “crash of 1990” in hotel business is only history because of the healthy recover. But hotel industry may again face depression by an economic crisis or some other factor. An international hotel like Crowne Plaza Hotel Dubai needs a stable national and international economy. A crisis from any part of the world will affect the movement of the people that will in turn surely make a dilemma. Volcanic ash from the volcano eruption in Ice Land caused crisis all over the world. Air services were disturbed in Western Europe which adversely affected the tourism and hotel industry. These types of situations are creating dilemmas before the management of the hotels. National economy of Dubai depends entirely up on external or international conditions.   Apart from other nations in central Asia, Dubai government provides the license for all types of enjoyment in hotels. There are liberal conditions in Dubai without strict rules and regulations. Crowne Plaza Hotel Dubai offers liquor services to the visitors of Dubai. But some incidents may be caused by the rejection of liquor service license of the hotel from the part of the government. Loss of a liquor permit will make serious failure in the future of a business hotel. Without a bar generally hotel customers would not like a particular function at a hotel in addition to food and drink services which can provide as a major profit of the hotel. Often, new license is not possible because of the high expense or political interference.    Dubai is an important city. So there is the chance of a terrorist attack against the westerners like the Bali incident in Indonesia and Taj hotel at Mumbai in India. Crowne Plaza Hotel Dubai is located near World Trade centre, Ski Dubai, Wild Wadi Water Park and mall of the emirates. An attack may be planned in this area because of the key centers of the city. The retreat of visitors for a long time is seriously affecting many cities. Thus various factors will make dilemma or crisis in the smooth running of hotel industry.   3. What are the main strengths and weaknesses in the tourism/ hotel offering? In Dubai, tourism/hotel offers great opportunities for both the domestic and international tourists. It is clear that tourism is an activity of a person traveling to stay in outside places their common surroundings for not more than one repeated year for business and other reasons. Hotels offer different types of traditional sports such as horse racing, falconry, and camel racing. Through the emergence of medical tourism, hotels offer medical facilities also where people can ensure medical service and care. Hotels offer convincing and affordable prices for all products but they earn the good and better package. They did not worry about their pricing of products and they manage the price loss in different ways. They give good hotel facilities and give good food in cheaper price. The hotel room rates are very less than other tourist centers. Hotels have well developed transportation facilities which are suitably provided to foreign people. The airline transportations are trying to give more fortification and safety regarding traveling. Dubai follows the trouble-free entry regulations and as a result of this all of the travelers need to get hold of a visiting visa prior to entering Dubai. The travelers can get an entry authorize stamped in their passport up on their arrival. Dubai has developed all possible tourist centers so day by day large numbers of travelers arrive at Dubai. News reports underline the reality that these rapid growths of tourism/ hotel industry make different problems in Dubai such as pollution etc. One of the most significant issues related to Dubai hotel industry is that Dubai has no proper action to control waste products and it often creates environmental problems. Increasing wastes negatively affect or hinder the health care programs. Tourism increases growth rate, national income and investments but it is very harmful to environment. Generally the ecosystem gets polluted and natural resources become reduced in Dubai. It faces another related issues and the reality is that Dubai needs to encourage all tourists but is not a proper place as a holiday destination.
