? The Effect of Themed Hotels to the Tourism Industry Table of Contents Table of Contents 2 3 Introduction 4 Facts/Findings 4 Discussion/Analysis 6 Looking for a Theme Hotel, many themed hotels are built proximal to the casinos. In addition to that, the site also states that people make the choice of obtaining their services from themed hotels as a way of looking for something different from what they are used to. Their main aim is to seek change from the basic ordinary services they are used to. This there calls for the managers of these hotels to work tooth and nail to ensure that indeed, their customers get something worth calling new and hence, make them develop the thirst of wanting to come back. In case of the local tourists visiting the hotels for their services, the choice of themes to be used should not be of the local culture. It has to be something new since they are used to whatever is in the locality. 7 To sum up the discussion section of this research study, it should be noted that management of any business enterprise is very vital. These hotels if well managed will not only benefit the owners but also the nation in which a given hotel is found. This is through earning the nation foreign exchange, which in turn helps in sky rocketing the country’s economy. This will end up improving the living standards of the citizens. 7 Conclusion/Recommendations 8 References 10 Abstract The main purpose behind conducting this study was to investigate the effect of themed hotels on the tourism industry. The researcher mainly collected information from secondary sources to make the analyses, recommendations and conclusion of this report. The findings of the study outline how the tourism industry is influenced by the type of hotel in question. At the end of it, there are some recommendations, which if put in action, can propel the industry to rise higher and higher. Introduction A hotel can be termed as a commercial place where people, especially travelers and tourists buy meals, pay for accommodation services. A theme on the other hand, despite the various meanings the word bears, in the context of this report, it refers to the hotels having artistic decorations. These decorations can be in form of paintings on the wall that result in to a recurring pattern making the place look more attractive than in the case of ordinary hotels. Another word we need to be familiar with before proceeding with the report is tourism. The definition of the word Tourism can be that it is an activity carried out by either one person or a group of persons. This is usually as a result of people moving from one place to another. It can be from one country to another with the aim of performing a given task or just for the sake of entertainment. This report deals with the facts, discussions, conclusions and recommendations relating to the effect of themed hotels on the tourist industry. As outlined by http://www.unusualhotelsoftheworld.com; Unusual & Unique Hotels of the World, there are various themed hotels worldwide examples being Reino Fungi Lodge and Nothofagus Hotel and Spa ( both located at the Huilo Huilo Biological Reserver), Magic Mountain Hotel situated in the midst of Chilean Patagonian Rainforest, The Pavillion – London in the United Kingdom and many others. Facts/Findings Themed hotels bearing some sort of uniqueness are slightly costly. Though some tourists shy away, a good number of them being the local tourists, the number is incomparable to those who visit the places or else it could be useless to carry on with the business. In the course of this research study, it was evident that these hotels have a notable impact on the tourism industry. Firstly, due to the unique motif they bear in their establishment starting from the decor, dining and the personnel. This is as according to www.wisegreek.com; (What is a themed Hotel?) The choice of the theme to be used should typically connote every little detail be it in the hotel where the visitors get their meals from, the rooms in which they will spend their night and amenities. This makes the tourist find something new to not only talk about but also to experience, hence breaking the monotony of the ordinary hotels; they have perhaps interacted with starting from their home countries. The designing is usually affected by interior designers that design themes that go hand in hand with the hotel’s branding campaign. The things to be themed comprise of furniture, signage, wall treatments and any of literature. This makes the tourists find a reason of wanting to visit the place over and over again hence boosting the industry. Most tourists, especially the ones that visit Africa are usually the whites. These people have a liking of photo-taking. This therefore means that, in case they visit such places, they will have a lot of fun taking photos while seated on the themed furniture and also using a themed wall as the background of the various photos they will be taking. These photos make their friends in their respective home countries admire and even arrange to visit such hotels for accommodation and other services whenever they visit the country. Secondly, according to http://insite.artinstitutes.edu Themed Hotels Provide Escape to Far Away Lands - Ai Insite, the location of these hotels also has a hand in the flourishing of the sector. Most of them are found in theme parks, well-liked vacation destinations and are found in the major cities worldwide, that is, places where most tourists land before setting off to other destinations. This makes the tourists to feel at home due to the ease of access the facilities. More so, these places are usually designed/decorated bearing the elements that typically appeal to the visitors (tourists) so as to make them enjoy their stay and hence develop the interest of wanting to come back. Despite such places costing slightly more than ordinary ones, a negligible number of tourists seem to shy away from obtaining their hospitality from the same, since, as mentioned earlier, it helps in breaking the monotony. The choice of the theme to be used will rely on various factors ranging from the location of the hotel, the kinds of tourists usually received in the place; in terms of their general likes (for example there are some key cultures which are liked by most tourists. A good example of such cultures for instance in Kenya, are the Maasai and Turkana Cultures), mission (for example camping, romance) among others. In case one chooses to use a theme denoting a given culture, for instance the Maasai culture, some of the things to be included in the theme may include a drawing of a Maasai warrior standing on one foot, in a checked red sheet holding a club. The theme may also have a gourd of milk somewhere and perhaps a spear and a shield. Discussion/Analysis Though few, most of these hotels are private and hence the owners end up monopolizing the business and as a result, some of them set very high service fee thus making some tourists to shy away. It is the researcher’s argument that the government increases these facilities and also subsidizes the accommodation fees and other costs incurred by the visiting tourists in these places. This will stimulate more tourists to come and as a result, increase the level of income earned by the country. Themed hotels also ought to be set up proximal to those places tourists visit such as animal parks so as to the increase accessibility. Since most of these parks are in the hands of the government, this provides a loophole for the government to set up these facilities even inside enclosure. When it comes to the personnel offering the services in the hotels, most of them are just trained perhaps to suit the environment. Instead of this, it would be better for instance, if the theme used belongs to the culture of a given community, some of the members of that community ought be taken and trained so that they do the serving. This makes it to lather better than taking personnel from totally different culture. For instance, if for example a Hindu them has been used, it looks better if some Hindus are used to provide services rather than perhaps the whites or even the Africans being used as service providers. Looking for a Theme Hotel, many themed hotels are built proximal to the casinos. To sum up the discussion section of this research study, it should be noted that management of any business enterprise is very vital. These hotels if well managed will not only benefit the owners but also the nation in which a given hotel is found. This is through earning the nation foreign exchange, which in turn helps in sky rocketing the country’s economy. This will end up improving the living standards of the citizens. Conclusion/Recommendations In a nutshell, themed hotels boost the tourism industry by a significant percentage. Bearing this in mind, the owners of such facilities ought to expand them so as to increase their occupancy. Due to the cost of coming up with such structures, very individuals do manage in setting them up. The government can come in and support those interested, since at the end of the day, it still the same government that is going to benefit from the foreign exchange earned and as a result, the country’s economy as a whole is affected positively. New hotels should be set up in more strategic places that will make the tourists access them with ease. Though costly, those themes ought to be changed frequently so as to make the tourists find something new that will make them want to revisit the place. Since different people do have different tastes and preferences, it not very difficult to predict what one likes. In that connection, suggestion boxes ought to be put in these places so that the tourists suggest what the owners of these places can do to make them enjoy their stay even more. In addition to these, quality assurance forms can also be prepared so that the tourists complete them on their last day just before their departure. This will help the management in rectifying necessary areas while at the same time think of coming up with new and better ideas. This will go a long way in bettering the industry. To cut on the cost of expenses incurred by the owners of the themed hotels, they may use movable soft boards to partition their premises so that those themes are designed on those boards. They can still serve the purpose so long as they use boards of a quality and appealing texture. This makes the themes to be easily changed which is easier as compared to those themes designed on the permanent wall. It also makes it possible for them to be re-used. Any form of literature can be done on some pieces of cloth, which can also be changed easily as compared to the literature done on the permanent walls. This can also lead to the owners of such places to lower their prices so as to attract more tourists, hence improving the industry.
