Additionally, at the present, the implementation and use of the wireless and radio technologies in daily life and businesses is one of the growing trends. In addition, with the passage of time, we are observing more developments and improvements in the electronic and wireless technology areas. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the “Bluetooth” technology, its implementation and working areas. This research will also outline some of main technology and operational areas of the “Bluetooth” technology. This research will discuss some of main advantages and problems associated with this technology. This paper will also recommend the measures those can make this technology better. What is “Bluetooth” technology? Bluetooth is acknowledged as a personal area network because of its smaller range than WiFi (30 feet). Additionally, it does not involve line for signals since it utilizes radio waves. In addition, at the present, various mobile devices such as PDAs and cell phones are emerging equipped with Bluetooth. A Bluetooth is used to allow a Laptop to connect to cell phone via Bluetooth to use the internet by making use of cell phone’s wireless connectivity (Ray, 2004, p.181). This wireless connection allows to easily interconnecting via a short-range wireless link. In this way we can transfer data within short distance with high data rate. In addition, through this technology, users of wireless technology, cellular phones, PDAs can purchase a 3in1 mobile phone that is able to offer facility of portability of the office or home. It also presents the capability to obtain rapidly synchronized information using a notebook or desktop computer. Furthermore, the use of Bluetooth at business sector facilitates in sending or receiving a fax, virtual business meeting, working collaboration, initiate a print-out and also the facility of the fixed computer devices with complete coordination (Flint et al., 1998). Figure 1Simple example of Bluetooth connection, Source: http://www.friendlybits.com/fb-images/bt_vrs_wf/wlan_ex01.jpg In short, Bluetooth wireless technology is a fast, low-power microwave wireless connection technology that is used to attach laptops, phones, PDAs, and various portable devices jointly within a small area (Mittal, 2009). Furthermore, a Bluetooth technology chip is taking the place of the cable technology by transmitting the information at an extraordinary 2.4GHz data transfer frequency to a receiver Bluetooth chip (Btdesigner, 2009). Below given diagrams show working of Bluetooth: Figure 2Working of Bluetooth, Source: http://casestudy-itgs.wikispaces.com/Terminology+-+Bluetooth Capacity and Features Lucistnik (2009) stated that Bluetooth is a wireless technology intended for establishing a personal network with the data transfer capacity of 2.4 GHz unlicensed band. However, this personal network possesses the data transfer range of approximately 10 meters. In addition, these Bluetooth networks are typically established through ad-hoc portable devices like that handhelds, PDAs, cellular phones and laptops. Also, the Bluetooth technology offers superior level service profiles. These superior level service profiles include the FTP similar to serial line emulation, file servers, voice transport, file pushing, as well as lot of other functionalities (Lucistnik., n.d). Figure 3Bluetooth Frequency Band Source: http://www.howstuffworks.com/bluetooth.htm/printable Lucistnik (2009) outlined that Bluetooth wireless technology get rid of a lot of the wires that disturb our homes, offices, etc., as permitting our communication via electronic devices of tomorrow to communicate with each another. Bluetooth technology is as well intended to make simpler data synchronization among web based devices and computers. In addition, the product having Bluetooth features and technology has to qualify interoperability test from the SGI (Bluetooth Special Interest Group) before its release into the market (Lucistnik., n.d). The technology of the Bluetooth is very simple and cheaper as compared to other wireless technologies. Since, the price of a very sophisticated Bluetooth chip is less than or equal to $5. In addition, this technology or chip is also having low power consumption. For all these qualities now this technology is part of each wireless handheld system and device. Thus, its qualities of low power consumptions and greater data rate attract people to adopt and make use of this technology at any place, anywhere (Palo Wireless, n.d). How Bluetooth technology works? According to Oak (2009), the Bluetooth Wireless Technology SIG administers uphold the Bluetooth standard. Additionally, the communication standard for the Bluetooth Wireless Technology accepted by IEEE is 802.15la. The basic aim behind the development of the Bluetooth technology was to develop a single digital wireless protocol, which would be able to link numerous devices as well as handle the synchronization matters. It allows short-range wireless communication consequently putting back wires between the electronic devices (Oak, 2010). For the working of Bluetooth technology there is a RF transceiver that lies at network physical layer. A Bluetooth has 79 channels those are spaced over 1MHz apart. Additionally, a extended spectrum technology is employed at the physical layer of network communication. Together data and voice transmissions over small distances through creating wireless PANs (GsmFavorites, 2003). A Bluetooth device is composed of a communication adapter. In addition, Bluetooth adapters could be built in into a device or in a shape of a card that are connected to a device. The communication instructions are build-in and embedded into the combination device, that allows it to communicate with other devices (Johnson Consulting, 2004). Below given image shows the working of Bluetooth: Figure 4Working of Bluetooth, Source: http://casestudy-itgs.wikispaces.com/Terminology+-+Bluetooth When Bluetooth devices approach in range of each other’s radio signals, their connection managers find out each other availability. Additionally, the LMP (Link management protocol) connects itself in peer-to-peer data and message exchange among the Bluetooth devices. In addition, the link management protocol layer establishes setup as well as negotiation of communication and data exchange packet size. Here in case of data transfer the reassembling and segmentation of transferred and received data packets are performed, if required (GsmFavorites, 2003) & (Oak, 2010). Figure 5Different Functional Blocks in Bluetooth System Source: [http://www.exforsys.com/tutorials/wireless/how-bluetooth-technology-works.html] Franklin & Layton (2009) have stated that in case of Bluetooth devices combination service delivery protocol facilitates a Bluetooth device to link a PICONET. Since, a device requests regarding what kind of services are obtainable via the PICONET. After this inquiry the Bluetooth GlobalID is swapped among the communicating wireless devices. After that their communication profiles are matched as well as a link is established. Bluetooth employs frequency hopping technique in timeslots that outlines that the Bluetooth signals pass up interference by means of additional signals through hopping to a novel frequency following reception or transmission of each packet. One packet is able to cover up to five time slots. Bluetooth is able to hold up a single asynchronous data channel, or can facilitate up to three concurrent synchronous voice channels. There is facility of supporting a single channel that at the same time holds the synchronous voice and asynchronous data. Wireless Bluetooth commutation technology makes use of the idea of slave and master. In a communicating arrangement a devices that is Slave needs to wait until the Master device permits them to communicate. In such scenario a single Master can hold up to 7 slaves through a star topology network design to shape a PICONET (Franklin & Layton, 2010). Figure 6- Bluetooth Mater Slave Interaction {source: http://www.swedetrack.com/images/bluet13.htm} Application of Bluetooth Technology This section is about the detailed analysis of the different implementations of the Bluetooth technology for commutations and data transfer. Here below I have presented some of main areas and sectors of industry those are making use of Bluetooth communication technology. For Domestic and Personal usage Below given chart shows the consumption of Bluetooth enabled devices will be reached up to 8 Billion devices till 2011. This shows the progress and adoption of this device: Figure 7 The consumption of Bluetooth enabled devices, Source: http://www.blueradios.com/images/billion_chart.jpg Here are the following uses of the Bluetooth technology for the domestic and personal purposes (Bluetomorrow, 2009) & (Btdesigner, 2009) & (Franklin & Layton, 2010) & (Oak, 2010); A usual Bluetooth mobile phone is sued for data transfer and communication Wireless networking among personal computers in a small working space Wireless contact via PC output and input devices Contact details, transfer of files as well as reminders among devices via OBEX Substitute of customary wired serial communications Communication via low bandwidth applications Is used for transmitting small advertisements as of Bluetooth-enabled advertising hoardings Is used in digital cameras and camcorders Is used in home appliances (like that washers, microwaves, refrigerators driers) Is used in cell phones Is used in GPS navigation receivers Is used in keyboards and mice Is used in headsets Is used in PDAs Is used in Laptops Is used in printers Is used in Scanners Is used in-car hands-free kits For Business and Bluetooth technology Flint, Karvinen, McKnight, & Tee (2008) stated that at business we have extensive implementation of the Bluetooth technology. Since, in the offices we have short distance data communication, data transfer, printing and business communication. Additionally, the business information systems could be interconnected through the Bluetooth technology in different departments. Since, the technology of the Bluetooth offers the facility to link the business and data of information system in different business divisions. In addition, the Bluetooth technology at businesses offers the facility to share data and information without the huge structure and wirings of the cables. Furthermore, this also reduces the cost of smaller network establishment, handling, management and control (Flint et al., 1998). Below Image shows the network established using Bluetooth: Figure 8 Bluetooth Network, Source: http://www.javatech.eu/bluair.html Weakness of Bluetooth technology In Bluetooth technology at daily usage system we are having weak signals so it doesnt interfere with cell phone signal or additional signals. Additionally, this technology is similar to the radio signal technology. Bluetooth technology frequently has a data transmission range of 10 meters. Thus, the basic weakness factor in this technology is its weak signals those are not having the capability to travel further than that. Additionally, in the huge business structure and large information system structure the use of Bluetooth technology can create problems because it does not permit data communication at huge distance. In this case this technology is not effectively operational. It is suitable for the only office based communications and data handling. So, the main weakness of the Bluetooth technology is its weak signals that make less significant implementation of this technology at business or personal level (Businessknowledgesource, 2009). Recommendations Bluetooth technology offers lots of advantages. However its short distance communication ability makes its second choice. In case of LAN (local area network) the WiFi wireless network communication technology is offering better data rate and communication facilities. However its Bluetooth technology is not able to meet that distance and access level. Thus, to improve the working power and communication of the Bluetooth technology we need to enhance the Bluetooth signal capacity. Since, the extension of the Bluetooth technology communication range and signal capacity can make this technology more preferred choice at business and domestic level. Conclusion Bluetooth technology offers simple and convenient method of facilitating a variety of computer devices to communicate to each other to their peripherals, at the lowest cost. The realism has up till now met the promise. In addition, Bluetooth is turning out to be more and more functional and widespread day by day. Bluetooth is just about surely in our future. In this research I have presented a detailed analysis of the Bluetooth technology. Here I have outlined the Bluetooth technology structure and its potential implementation at personal and business levels. I have outlined its main advantages and potential problems. This research also recommended about the enhancement in the Bluetooth technology and its communication structure. I hope this research will be useful in gaining an overview of Bluetooth technology.
