Appreciating and understanding different national cultures is important in understanding individual characters and ultimately generating good working relations. As a supervisor, this information is valuable. For example, an employee who comes from a country where the power distance is large may find it difficult to approach their supervisor or to disagree with a supervisor. A director who understands the employee’s culture will be in a position to change the employee’s attitude by speaking to them about the issue. The understanding generates effectiveness in the business as there will be enhanced communication and understanding. Downsizing always entails a reduction in employee numbers. There is simply no other method for downsizing apart from dismissal. It involves ordering or allowing someone to leave. The best approach is voluntary resignation with exit incentives. Exit incentives allow employees to leave the firm either through optional severance or early retirement. This option is best as it recognizes employees for their service and enables companies to retain the remaining employees. The best supervisors are those that fall into the Generation X category. Whether one comes into the organization as a generation Y, to be a supervisor they must harness the characteristics of X supervisors. A supervisor should not rush to roll out new software for critical organizational operations. A new software is sometimes just a prototype that may have a lot of errors.
