Laptop vs desktopAbstractAs technology advances, computers are becoming more and more powerful in our daily life situations. This paper makes a comparative study of Laptop and desktop computers.IntroductionA comparative study of Laptops and desktops (Tomorrow’s Technology and You, p.90) computers are often required when we decide about purchasing a computer. Both forms of computers have merits as well as some demerits. Both are essential for modern life because of a variety of reasons. Nobody can think in terms of keeping a desktop while traveling for business purposes.

Nobody needs to purchase laptops for their office work when there are desktops with higher storage capacity. A comparative study of laptops and desktops is helpful while deciding about which form of computer one would purchase based on their requirements.“Storage - One of the major places where laptops and desktops differ is in how much hard drive space they offer. Laptops use physically smaller drives, which can only offer so much storage space. Though larger drives are available, 100GB is still common on a laptop, while 500GB desktop drives are seen all the time (again, bigger drives can be had).

This is a huge difference and it seems to be expanding, not contracting. If you have very large storage needs, the desktop is your best bet”. (Christopher Null)Laptop vs desktop 3As technology increases the needs and the usage of computers also increase. 1 GB hard disk space was more than enough a decade ago. But now even a 500 GB storage space does not seem to be attractive for an average computer user. The requirement for storage space is increasing as most of the conventional manual clerical work and accounting work are now given way to computers.

The requirement for more graphic facilities again increases the requirement for more storage spaces. Computers are now used extensively for media usage and hence more storage space is required in such cases. In all the above cases the desktop outplays a laptop.“Of course, the main benefit of a laptop is the portability. This can be a huge benefit, allowing you to take your computer to and from work, on planes, on camping trips, and practically anywhere else. Along with this benefit comes a large drawback.

It is just as easy for someone else to walk off with it as it is for you. Laptops are stolen at an alarming rate because they are just so easy to steal. And when that computer is stolen, not only do you lose the value of the computer, but also all of your valuable data” (Daniel Persson)Nobody can imagine a business executive keeping a desktop with him while going on business trips. Lightweight laptops which can be accommodated in a briefcase are more comfortable in business trips. The wireless technologies made it possible to communicate with others and also to download a file that is kept on a distant desktop computer, using a laptop even while traveling.

Thus mobility is the main area where a Laptop vs desktop 4laptop outscores a desktop. But at the same time, the main drawback of laptops is the lack of safety. Anybody can easily steal a laptop when compared to a desktop and hence there is a great probability of losing valuable data. ConclusionThe main benefit of a desktop over a laptop is the greater storage facility. If storage is the prime requirement then the desktop is a better option compared to a laptop. (Christopher Null) Mobility is the main advantage of laptops compared to desktops.

The main drawback of laptops is their vulnerability to robberies.
