Communication helps people to share ideas, deliver messages, learn more about each other and develop long-lasting relationships. Effective communication can prevent conflicts or resolve them; it assists in achieving peace between the nations.
There are two basic types of communication: verbal and non-verbal. Verbal communication is the one expressed with the help of spoken words and phrases. Non-verbal communication includes the language of symbols, mimics, gestures, etc. In other words, it’s about talking to people without spoken words.
Just like any other process, an effective communication has certain factors that affect its nature. Why is it critical to consider the age? Well, age, gender, nationality, religion and many other personal factors predetermine the way people receive information better. It makes no sense to communicate with children and adults in the same way as adults possess richer vocabulary which allows them to understand many things better than children. Often, it takes children a while to communicate their needs properly. They lack words and patience. Thus, non-verbal communication works well for them.
Making sure the other side has enough time to retrieve your information and respond to it meaningfully is one more factor to consider. Expressing yourself verbally without receiving a feedback makes your speech a monolog. To avoid it, allow other people to think and provide comments on what you say. This way you will learn whether they agree or disagree with your points.
One of the first and the most vital facts to consider when promoting effective communication is the age of a person you are talking to. For talking to children significantly differs from talking to adults. As for children you need to simplify the language to meet them at their level, you are the one to maintain eye contact, make sure a kid is not feeling patronized, and watch out your body language. THe best thing is to engage emotions so that you will get the appropriate response. As for adults, they need to feel themselves valued in conversation, so engage all your best listening skills. Also, allow the person time for a response, do not rush to express everything you have in mind.
To be an effective communicator, listening is the first requirement. A good listener is a good communicator.
