Task “Determinants of the Salary level at private schools” INTRODUCTION This study concentrates on the examination ofthe factors that influence the salaries of instructors of private schools. The common notion of any middle level individual is that the instructor’s salary is determined by the level of degree and the experience attained, for instance a Masters and PhD degrees and may be fifteen years experience. Conversely, the rank is most likely to dictate the salary scale of an instructor. The rank determinable factors include the number of years an instructor on the current rank and years worked since the attainment of the degree. It is fundamental to determine which one of the two is significant. More over, expectations remain that; gender should not be a factor determining the level of an instructor’s salary. This study intends to divulge and ascertain these assumptions.
SAMPLE
This study considers 58 instructors of private schools as a set of observations. The data set comprises of 76% of male instructors and 24% of the female counterparts. The instructors have ranks ranging from 1 to 3. 1 represent assistant instructor, 2 for associate instructor and 3 for a full instructor. The data set comprises of 44% of the full instructors, 24% associate instructors while the assistant instructors form 31% of the data set.
It is estimated that, an instructor spends up to an average of 9.4 years in a current rank. Conversely, the standard deviation indicator of 7.7 shows the variation of years to be a dip of 1 year to a peak of 28 years. It is worth noting that, the number of years spent in a current rank varies significantly. The instructor’s educational achievement of full instructor level can be revealed by the data set under study. For instance, the data comprises of 69% of PHD holders and 31% of a Masters degree. Contextually, the PhD is regarded as the higher-level degrees while the masters as lower level degree. This study indicates that on average, an instructor would have finished 18 years since the attainment of the degree. However, the dataset comprise of new entrants into the position of instructor (after less than one year after attaining a degree) and another lot consisting of instructor’s with rich experience of not less than 37 years since the attainment of their degrees. In addition, the sample indicates that the average annual salaries vary from $15,000 to $40,050. This study finds fascinating to analyze the correlation the salaries amid the ranks.
The ANOVA table results indicates F=74.42, df= 57, p≤ 0.001, this interprets to a highly significant salary variation between the rank groups. It is worth noting that, an assistant instructor earns an annual average salary of $17,768 with a standard deviation being $2,223 the associate instructors earns $23,175 per Annum with a standard deviation of $1,838 and the full instructors earn $31,434 annually with a standard deviation of $5,033. It is observable that, there is a highly significant effect on salary consequently a highly significant correlation between the time spent in the present academic rank and the salary.
In addition, this survey indicates a non-significant correlation between the highest degree attained and the salary earned. Nonetheless, the salary for the master’s degree holders varies between $22,167 and $26, 551 and that for PhD holders range from $23,000 and $ 28,000, consider (T=0.75, df=53.4, P≥0.001). However, the survey indicates a positive correlation of the number of years since the attainment of the highest degree with the salary, Consider (coeff = 0.77, P≤0.001). It is noteworthy that, the degree attained does not have attribute to the salary variation, instead the experience after attaining of a degree significantly attributes to the salary variation.
Examining the correlation between the rank and the highest degree earned a couple of observations is evident. The variables are dependent of each other (= 9.58, df=2, p≤0.01). The other observation shows that persons with a higher degree occupy a full instructor position in a frequent rate. More over, it can be surprisingly being observed that, persons with a lower degree hold the position of full instructor compared to those with a high degree. This contrasts with the normal expectations of PhD holders holding full instructor position and Master holders holding associate instructor positions.
This study examines the gender attribute. The analysis indicates that, (= 5.58, df=2, p≤0.05), this implies that the variables gender and the instructor rank are independent of each other. The normal perception expects a few male to hold the positions of assistant and associate instructors and more in full instructor positions. However, this survey indicates a larger number of female in associate and full instructor positions and a few in assistant positions.
A further consideration involves the correlation of salary and gender. It is noticeable that, the correlation is significant since men earn a salary ranging from $24,300 and $28,500 while women earn a salary ranging from $18,000 to $25,000. This is a clear indication of considerable level of discrimination based on gender.
MODELS AND CONCLUSIONS
The following model involves construction of a multivariate regression model based on the instructors’ salaries as a function of numerous variables, which include, gender, instructor’s rank, number of years in the present rank, highest degree attained and number of years since the attainment of the highest degree.
