Correlation Discussion Every correlation determines how two variables depend upon each other. However, there are a variety of methods that are used to work out the correlation of any given data set.
If we had two variables that were used on a ranked scale, then we would likely use Spearmans rank correlation coefficient. A real world example of the use of this method could be the feedback that is gathered about a teacher at the end of the semester. The rating scale would contain a number of variables such as agree, somewhat agree, neutral, somewhat disagree, and disagree. If we were comparing this response to individual students’ grades, then Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient would be the best fit.
On the other hand, if we had two variables that were measured using a number scale, then the best method to use is Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient. We would probably use this method if we wanted to determine the relationship between a child’s age and their height.
The last type of method used for establishing correlation is if one of the variables uses a number scale and the other one uses a simply true/false scale. The best method to use here would be the point biserial correlation coefficient. The likely opportunity that this method would be used is a correlation between gender and height.
All of these methods can only tell us if two particular variables are related to each other, not whether one variable causes the other variable to change. Each method has its own positives and negatives, and each method can only really be used with its certain types of data.
A researcher may want to establish a correlation when they have a hypothesis, but do not have any way to prove it. Correlation allows relationships to be seen between an independent and a dependent variable. One of the variables has to be constant so that the other one can change according to the stable one. Once these variables can be measured, researchers can find links between certain actions. Read More

...? Methods of Correlation The correlation coefficient is the extent to which variation in the scores on one variable are associated with variation in the scores on another variable. Statistics offers a variety of methods by which a correlation can be established; since the data can be quite diverse in nature. Some often used techniques to establish linear correlation are: 1. Scatter-plot: the simplest method is to plot the scores on a graph to identify the extent of covariance between scores. The biggest problem with using only a scatter-plot is that while it does tell us of the direction of the relationship; it gives us no information about its strength and significance. 2. Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation Coefficient... : This is...

...?Correlation Correlation is one of the most common and important statistical analysis used today. A correlation is a single value that defines the extent of linear relationship between any two variables (Cohen et al. 8). For instance, we might be interested in assessing whether the number of hours students spend watching television is related to their performance in school. In such a case, we will interview a few students selected randomly from the student population regarding their television watching patterns, then compare these values with their GPA scores using appropriate correlation tests. Generally, we expect a negative correlation between the two...

Management and Spurious Correlation

...persuasive. The sad thing is that even with its persuasiveness, it goes on unnoticed from the people. Many people have spoken and written about spurious correlation, and it has not yet proved its significance to the lives of the populace. Maybe part of the problem is that there has been the presence of various variations in terms of the definitions used by different authors. Different authors have shown and illustrated in different ways that the fallacy does certainly exist, described and discussed. The purpose of the way the authors have defined spurious correlation is not so as to pit against each other, but to bring the realization that it is a fact that continues to be ignored by...

...Business - Decision Making A correlation may be defined as the relationship between two variables. It is represented by a number. "The correlation isone of the most common and most useful statistics." (Correlation, 2006). Correlation helps to analyze whether two variables are related and it also helps to determine the extend of their relationship with each other. Correlation may be of different types. The different types of correlation are explained below. Positive correlation: A positive correlation between two variable means that they behave in the similar way in their movement. "Positive correlation indicates that both variables increase or decrease together." (Karthik, 2005). A negative correlation means that the changes... in the...

Linear Correlation

...This study tests the correlation between chief executive officers (CEO) salaries and the degree of success of a company. The data of CEO Salaries andtotal Revenue in 2006 was collected for different organization from various respective companies. The data comprised 25 different companies of different size and market capitalization. It was expected to find strong positive correlation between CEO salaries and organization total revenue. Statistical analysis was conducted to conclude evidence in this relationship. Null Hypothesis: (Ho) There is no correlation between chief executive officer salaries and their respective company net revenues. Alternative Hypothesis: (HA) Chief executive officer salaries are positively correlated... with their...

Correlation Discussion

...Describe different methods of establishing correlation among variables and provide an example of each. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each method and where each must be applied. As one method, correlation and covariance matrices may be derived from numeric data columns in which there are two options: storing computation results in an auto-generated worksheet or exhibiting outcomes in a tabular form which may be filled in by color-coded values. This is limited, however, to storage in a single worksheet despite multiple numeric data columns required. One example: Fisher’s z-Transformation (zr) is another method which enables a skewed sampling distribution to be...

Correlation and Regression

...Correlation and Regression Question The ment “Cigarette Smokers Make Lower Grades than Nonsmokers” reflects a certain relationship between the two activities which are smoking cigarettes and making grades. Therefore, statistically both these activities can be denoted as the two variables i.e. smoking cigarette is one variable and making grades is another variable. By looking at the statement, there seems to be identified a very clear and obvious relationship between cigarette smoking and making grades such that high cigarette smoking leads to lower grades and vice versa. From this, it can be observed that if cigarette smoking is increased, it will result in lower grades and if cigarette smoking is decreased, it will...

Multiple Correlation and Regression

...Multiple Correlation and Regression In the first post for this discussion the purpose for this study was to find out how young children psychological development is affected in families which experience domestic violence. Therefore, the study set out to establish what effects domestic violence in families, have on the psychological development of young children in the United States. As earlier established, domestic violence has been studied for quite a long period of time but its effects have been studied on a general basis. This study thus narrows down to look at the psychological development of young children and how domestic violence has impacted it. There are two variables in research: the...

Analysis of Correlation and Association

...Correlation and Association Correlation and Association In statistical analysis, association and correlation coefficients are used in examining relationships between two variables. According to Willnat, Manheim and Rich (2011), coefficient of association “is a number that summarizes the amount of improvement in guessing values on one variable for any case based on knowledge of the values of a second.” The values are estimated using a proportionate reduction in error. This means that the prediction in a statistical data is more accurate when the association between two variables is great. The coefficient of association also uses the direction of relationships, whether positive or negative,...

...Correlation Correlation is very and is the statistical measure that gauges the relation of two sets of numbers that lie between-1 to 1. Correlation is very important when it comes to mathematics. It helps so much in the investing world since it helps the investors to minimize the risk since by the use of portfolios with those assets that have low correlation with one another. Correlation is also important since in this case causation does not apply. The other importance of correlation is that hypothesis in this case is stated in correlation. Causation requires correlation for it to be effective. ...
