Effect of Literacy on the Boys of Rural Communities of Age 8 – 12 Introduction: The importance of education is very much crucial of for allthe countries and the economies. In other sense, we can say that the literacy rate of any country actually shows the interest of the state and the government towards the spread of education in the public. The rate of literacy is the symbol of growth and development in any economy. If there is high literacy rate then it means that the people and the whole economy are growing in a positive direction because the literacy means the mental development of the people of the economy. Contrary to this, if the literacy rate of any economy is in negative direction then it surely indicates the stagnant position of the growth of the people and the overall economy. The literacy rate of any economy should always be in a positive direction because it may develop many other areas of any nation. The rate of literacy may go down because of the rural communities of the countries. In most of the situations, the people living in the rural communities are not enjoying the availability of the educational institutions because of the ignorance of the State and Government Officials. For this reason, many of the non-Government or we can say the not for profit organizations are trying their level best to facilitate these rural communities. So that the people living in these communities can also enjoy these institutions and thus the overall literacy rate may increase in this research essay, we will try to overview the effect of the literacy on the rural communities. After the situation analysis, we will put a research proposal for the NGO to establish strategies to increase the literacy rate of the rural economies. Literature Review: Many of the educational experts are of the opinion that educational literacy is an integral and crucial part of human life. The effects of low literacy rate are very much imposing on the daily routine of human beings (Hasaba, 2012). The literacy level may affect every single decision of human life. There will be a clear difference between the attitude of a literate and an illiterate person. The different aspects, which are affected by the literacy of the person, are his financial matters, poverty level of his living, personal and family life, less capability to participate and communicate with others in a team, health, safety and hygiene issues (Hasaba, 2012). According to the experts’ opinion, the children from their young age should get basic education because it may help to get the basic knowledge about the life and the other systems (Moulton, 2001). One of the major aspects of life, which can be affected by the illiteracy of the people, is the financial matters. An illiterate person cannot even spend is money wisely. On the other hand, a financially literate person can find a thousand ways to invest money and then generate gains on that investment. This financial literacy can only come if the children get basic education. The literacy level of a person may also help him or her to get a good education and then a life where he can meet the basic necessities of life with his earnings. In other words, we can say that the education makes a person capable enough to earn something (Moulton, 2001). An illiterate person cannot enjoy a relaxing life rather he and his family may go down the poverty line. In this way we can say that the illiteracy may affect the income, employment and the financial well being of any person. The effects of poverty are far reaching that include health, housing, security, food, lifestyle and most importantly access to basic necessities of life (Moulton, 2001). Another important point to be discussed here is the involvement and the revolution in the work style. The people having simple and basic education are considered illiterate for this technological world. Therefore, the young boys should reach not only basic education but also the modern education standards. The young boys in the rural communities should specifically try to avail the opportunities because this will help them to improve their life styles (Moulton, 2001). The illiteracy may cause a lack of confidence and many other skills in the children. The children who do not receive basic early education may fall behind the other children of their age (Role of NGO in Education Development, 2000; Clark, 2011). The lack of communication skills and the personality confidence may not allow them to participate in their responsibilities towards the society. In addition to this, the illiterate people may not have the knowledge about the hygiene principals for a better human life. The health, hygiene and the safety are very important part of life and thus they should be focused with deep observation skills. The illiterate child may find it difficult to maintain these three things i.e. hygiene, safety and health (Role of NGO in Education Development, 2000). There are many not for profit organizations who are working with the aim of eradicating the illiteracy from the rural communities and thus making available the opportunities of easy access to the education for the children of age 8 – 12 years (Konnate, 2010; Ridley, 2012). The basic reason behind this aim is that the illiteracy is actually destroying the age of children with its adverse effects. A country may have to suffer the social and economic cost of illiteracy if it exists in their country. Unluckily it is a fact that most of the countries are ignoring their rural communities in regard of literacy programs and strategies. Most of the literacy programs are offered for the developed areas of the country and the rural and less developed areas have to suffer the loss (Konnate, 2010). Therefore, the NGOs raise their voices and support the rural communities in order to give them accessibility to the educational facilities (What are the Effects of Low Literacy, 2001). The bright side of being literate is the relaxing and a comfortable lifestyle, which a man can earn in his life while using the skills, and capabilities, which he learn from his educational resources. Another expert is of the opinion that the children should learn the standards of living in the society in the early age. It is obvious that if children may not get proper guidance then they may choose a wrong field for themselves (Steward, 2012). According to a research study, the crime rate may increase when the literacy rate is not up to the mark. That means if we are not giving proper education to our children then it means that we are giving them ways to become a criminal. The reason is simple, everyone must need some money to live their lives but when the illiterate people cannot match up with the standards of the working class then they may find many other ways to have money (Steward, 2012; Ayeling, 2010). Literacy Program Proposal: The Non-Government organizations or commonly called NGOs can play an important role in the spread of literacy programs in the rural areas or the communities, which are neglected by the Government institutions. These NGOs are actually working on the donations and the grants of the people and rich businesspersons who usually gave their money for the benefit of the society. The basic aim of the NGO is to work without any profitability or the gains and earnings. They gather aids and donations from different developed countries and nations and then use this granted money in the under developed and in some cases developing countries. In this situation, there is no monetary benefit for the Ngo rather they are just offering their services in order to properly utilize the money resources for the good of rural communities of under developed areas. In case of literacy program proposal, the NGO will hire some educational experts and mentors in order to channelize the literacy programs in the rural communities. The educational experts may include teachers, writers and the mentors who actually knows the importance of literacy for the growth and development of the country. Here it must be noted that the NGO staff members will welcome all the volunteers for this literacy program. The educational experts aim to focus on the literacy campaign for the young children of age 8 –12 years. Because at this young age, the children require a high demand of tuition for them. At this point of time, it is easy to teach them and thus making them a useful part of the society where they live. If the children receive the basic education in the early years then it will be easy for them to become an active part or the member of the state. Contrary to this, the children who do not receive their early basic education may walk towards a destructive and negative direction. The learning at the young age plays an important role either it is positive or negative. According to the literacy program offered by the Ngo with the help of the educational experts and the volunteers who are willing to donate their money for the benefit of these poor children in the rural communities, there will be different agendas of the program. The NGO will try to give basic education to the children especially boys having age of 8 – 12 years. In addition to the basic education, there are some experts, who will give them some knowledge of technical skills so that it may help to earn a proper amount for living a better life. Along with the basic formal education, technical skills, the experts try to give know how about the hygiene and the health of the children. The children should be aware of the fact that they may have to follow some basic rules of hygiene in order to live a healthy life. It is a bitter reality that most of the people in the rural communities in the developing countries are not living a healthy and hygienic life just because of the ignorance and carelessness towards cleanliness. In addition to all of these aspects, the experts at the NGO management will try their level best to give proper educational facilities to the children of these rural communities while keeping in a limited budget. The educational experts will try to regularize the literacy reforms and the strategies for the young children in the rural areas. The grants and aids, which are collected from the rich people, will definitely help in this regard. The literacy program offered by the NGO in association with the volunteers’ educational experts, teachers, mentors and the readers and writers may help to make this literacy program a healthy and a prosperous step. This healthy step of literacy program will enhance the educational standards of the particular communities and thus the overall growth of the country will be in a positive direction.
