Knowledge form the study also enabled me to understand the leadership role in teams. In school, we formed teams with fellow students that gave us real experience when studying modules such as Public Relations Management and Strategy for Marketing Communications. I was also responsible for leading a team of 6 members in the research, planning, and execution of a 6 month Direct and Interactive Marketing campaign for Harrods Estates. The objective was the generation of £30 million in additional sales of the luxury residential properties in prime central London. While undertaking my masters degree, I participated actively in the course which covered several theories and applications of Operations and Supply Chain Management, E-Business and Business Studies. Background Qatar is a peninsula of approximately 11,437 square kilometers located in the Western shored of the Arabian Gulf. The country has witnessed rapid development and economic growth in the recent years. These developments, however, threaten a number of factors within the country. For instance, through rapid development, my country is at risk of uncontrolled expansion due to unmanaged growth. The control of the quality and size of the expatriate labour force is also proving to be a challenge. Modernisation of Qatar is responsible for many great positive things, but is also to blame for some of the negative effects such as the erosion of the country’s culture and traditions. The needs of the current and future generations are overpowered by the rapid economic growth and development. The country, is thus under constant economic growth but suffers from social and environmental management issues caused by the elevating population control problem. Such rapid changes in the country over a short span of time are responsible for creating intense strains between the old and new in nearly all aspects of life in the country. The modernised work patterns and pressures of competitive work environment in the country at times clashes with the traditional relationships valued by Qataris’ which are based on personal ties and trust. These are some of the aspects of the country’s current state due to modernisation that motivate me to study a post graduate degree in Sociology so that I may be able to address the effects of the current rapid development and economic growth to the native culture and social setup of my country. Personal Desire My choice of studying a PhD in Sociology is sparked by the societal and cultural impacts resulting from economic development and modernisation of Qatar. Since the discovery of oil in the 1930s and the full independence of Qatar in 1971, my country has experienced rapid development and unprecedented wealth. Qatar currently has the highest GDP per capita and economic growth rate recorded at 19.4 percent in 2010. The three drivers of economic growth in Qatar are development of local human capital, oil and gas reserves and the opening up of the country’s economy to expatriates and migrant workers. Two of the country’s economic drivers have interesting implications for Sociology and particularly interest me. These are the opening up of the local economy to expatriates and the development of the local human capital. My desire is to examine the cultural and social impacts of modernisation among the Qatari population (females, males and the young versus the old). Qatar has a population of approximately 2 million individuals. Out of this number, close to 300,000 are locals with the rest of the population being made up of foreign workers and immigrants. The effects of this increased population in Qatar include the changing in the social dynamics of the country. Furthermore, the main foreign workforce is comprised of male population thereby causing a major gender imbalance in the country. Men currently represent 76 percent of the total population of Qatar. This increased male population has at times caused problems. For example, in 2011, the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning ordered the relocation of thousands of low income male workers from residential areas to Doha’s Industrial areas due to complaints from several local families of the lack of respect for local traditions and values by these expatriate bachelors. With study of these areas, I can be able to address many such issues which may hinder the development of the country. I am also interested in understanding the gradual adoption of my country’s beliefs and ideas to Westernisation and modernisation. For example, there has been a steady increase in the education of women and adoption of careers by females in the country. Participation of women in education and the workplace is increasing more than ever before in my country. Through studying Sociology, I will be able to understand the causative agents of the same, and the impacts of such dynamics to the country’s economy in the long-run. Finally, I share sentiments of other Qatari’s on the overdependence of the country to foreign labour. The increased immigrant population is responsible for the current population problem. Moreover, the increasing foreign population is feared by many Qataris to be the putting the culture of Qatar at risk. By studying a postgraduate degree in Sociology, I am confident that I will be able to address this issue alongside other pressing matters of development as I believe that the preservation of my country’s culture is a greater course as compared to rapid development and urbanization. Career In my line of duty, my career objectives include becoming a research and communications expert who is recognised for thoughtful leadership on effective integration in multi-cultural and cross-geographical space. I also strive to be an integral part of a strategic management team in an organisation in order to formulate and implement effective corporate change. Summary I am interested in pursuing a PhD in Sociology. My motivation is based on personal desire to understand the effects of rapid economic growth and development in my country. With adept understanding of the aforementioned, I will be able to help in solving some of the key pressing issues and effects of development to my country’s social and cultural setup. I am positive that fulfilling my desire will not only benefit me, but also my fellow countrymen. I believe that economic development is a great achievement for my country, but however, this growth and development should not come at a cost of other spheres within the country (social, traditional and cultural).
