The article ‘declare your independence’ is extremely informative. This is despite the fact that the article requires the reader to have information and knowhow with regard to the food industry. This is particularly necessary in ensuring every bit of the article is fully understood. The range of topics in the articles calls for one to be sure and keen enough in order to have a full comprehension of the article. The article presents a whole new view to the modern times food. Working into a supermarket and one may see what looks like food. These in the actual sense are more than just food. Biotechnology through genetic engineering as well as industrial agriculture has practically taken a centre stage at the expense of the heritage staple crops. The naturalness of these staple crops has been altered by industrial agriculture and genetic engineering. This way, the relationship between these industrial and genetically engineered crops and the real foods being farmed organically in small farms has been utterly lost. The Conventional foods almost have no resemblance with foods that were being eaten sixty years. This is despite the fact that the foods in these two different times could still be having the same name (Salati 24). According to Salatin Joel’s article “declare your independence” there have been so many changes in the farming methods used and food production systems over years. These modifications have resulted in foods that are nutritiously less useful to the human bodies and harm full to human health in some cases. Most of the packaged foods eaten today are being traded on a vague argument. The argument is that the foods are not only fresh and but they were also grown on farms following the traditional farming methods. Traders further convince food consumers that such food was properly produced in food industries with human health as a concern. The reality about these industrial foods is that they are less wholesome as many food suppliers are claiming. It is true that food industries use marketing, intimidation as well as legislation to keep their food consumers utterly in the dark about the actual source of their food and how these foods are being produced. This article fully exposes the underbelly that is highly mechanized. American food consumers have been hidden from these despite the government’s regulatory agents being fully aware. It is true as per the article that, the nation’s supply of food is now under the control of a small number of corporations. These handful food production and supply corporations are known to put profit ahead of the livelihood of the farmers in America, health of the food consumer, workers’ safety and the environment (Salati 24). The article give an eye opener to the rising cases of developed chicken with bigger breast, soya beans that are insects, perfect pork chop and even tomatoes that do not go mouldy in the food markets. Other the other hand, there are increasing cases of new E. coli strains of Bacteria. These are the harmful bacteria that are known to cause illness annually to an estimate of 73000 Americans. Everyone is riddled with obesity being widespread among children. The adults are not spared either. The diabetes level among them is getting higher and higher. The article does not particularly point out the relationship between the modified agricultural practices used in industrial agriculture, the food industrial process used in food production and these modern times challenges (Pollan 18). It is scientifically true that this production involving oriented farming practices is bound to have a lot of negative effects. These effects are on the environment as well as a direct harm to the human health. Articles of this nature should further educate dangers of industrial foods. There also need to expose those food supply corporations that do not meet the recommended standards in their foods production. The article should as well direct such blames on the government’s agents. This will ensure that consumers are protected by the government from the profit minded food supply corporations (Pollan 18). The article gives some strong points and surprising revelations of truths that are often shocking to know. These are the truths about the nature of foods consumed on a daily basis, how these foods are being produced, what America as a nation has become and where it is headed to from this point. At one may be tempted to think about the article as being a lobby against the tremendous unhealthy food. A small number of companies in the food industry are running almost everything. It is true and scary that this article is diverse and never lobbies against any company. It simply lays criticisms on those food companies that are profit oriented with little concerns on consumers’ well being. Despite the fact that this article is unbiased and straightforward in its point articulations, the anti-scientific propaganda content in it against genetic engineering can be tiring to a scientist. It is really true that genetic engineering is a fledging technology in foods’ industry. Corporations that only care about their profit making and less care on the consumers’ health deserved to be stopped. Technology on the other hand is in itself a valuable thing. This way, there should be attempt to stop technology in production. Agricultural innovations coupled improved technology in food production is the only sure way of attaining global food sufficiency. Thus the article should have focused more on ways of ensuring for consumer safety in foods that are technologically produced rather than totally discouraging the use of genetic engineering. The fact that all human desires and needs are in one way or another delegated to some kind of specialists should further be acknowledged by this article (Admin 31). The best part of this article lies in its practical solutions to the modern times problems associated with foods and consumption habits. Suggestions given by the article may act as a guide on how to get more involved in changing personal actions. This is very appealing to everyone in the modern times’ world characterized by health complications. These suggestions may offer a lasting solution to the rising cases of obesity among the young and diabetes among the adults. Any one struggling to learn more about the food they eat, where such food come from, the level of safety in such food and who actually hurt or benefit from their food choices should pick this article. Nevertheless, it can be overwhelming to read this article since it covers everything. Furthermore some issues covered in the article may be a bit complex for someone with little knowledge on food. Such areas should have been thoroughly explained. The article is generally a good read for all eaters (Admin 31). Works cited Salatin Joel. Declare your independence.
