Skills Development in Observation The young woman entered my counselling office early that morning. She wore a haggard and weary look, appeared disturbed, very dull and was generally weak. I gave her a warm hand shake accompanied by a verbal welcome as I pointed at the client’s seat in my small room. I was touched by her general appearance and really felt for her. I started by preparing her psychologically by mentioning my name, the kind of services I rendered the different clients I dealt with this was aimed at making her feel encouraged to present her problems after I was convinced that she had developed confidence with me I told her to present her case to me disclosing any single bit that could be disturbing her pointing out that a problem shared is a problem half solved. Upon her presentation I learnt that her name was Irene aged twenty and from Chile, along narrow country west Coast of South America. Irene was a single mother of a two year old son and suffered depression which dated five years back. It all started when her parents who lived as squatters and worked on huge estate owned by a few rich people from Chile separated. The father was a drunkard who spent all his money with buying local brews neglecting his family and leaving the burden of family provision to the mother. Most at times he would come home drunk and start quarreling the entire family which necessitated their separation and the mother had to flee together with her family to Santiago some miles away the settled in the sprawling slums of the city without anything to cater for the basic needs. They solely depended with Catholic Church leaders for their survival in the new habitant. The church leaders were actively involved in promoting social and political reforms which to a large extent benefited the slums dwellers. Immediately after her parents separation Irene had to discontinue her schooling and therefore she never had enough skills to help her secure a job in their motherland where poverty and unemployment level were very high. In the city she tried looking for the job but she was unsuccessful. After two years of fruitless job searching in Santiago Irene decided to migrate to the neighboring country of Peru in an effort to secure a job as she heard that jobs were available here. After her arrival in this country she was lucky enough to secure a job that earned some good money in relation to her education level. For the first time she could afford better housing facilities and other basic needs. In the line of working she befriended a young man who worked in the adjacent company. They relationship grew stronger day after the other such that the young man proposed to the innocent and naïve young lady that she move to his apartments so that they may start staying together she welcomed the idea because she was deeply in love with the man. He promised to marry her and spend the rest of their life together which sounded caring and gave Irene much encouragement upon learning her personal, family and social history. This led to her shifting in his fiancées apartment and were now staying together as a husband and wife at all this time there was much commitment displayed by both parties. After six months of staying together the young man started behaving differently to the surprise of Irene he started quarrelling her and they were in constant conflicts characterized by physical beatings. Their relationship turned sour and his boyfriend moved from the apartment without informing her leaving the then pregnant lady helpless and traumatized by what had transpired. She remained strong and tried to cope with the situations though she could not achieve mental stability. She later delivered a baby boy who she raised with a lot of difficulties unaware of what to follow. At all this time she had not communicated with her parents since she never established contact with them after leaving the motherland. This disturbed her most as she was eager to reunite with her family members. After fully exhausting all her woes I embarked on a theoretical framework aimed at eroding her depression. I started with her boyfriend’s case which appeared to have the greatest magnitude and contribution to her mental state this I started by briefly explaining the connection between discovery, creating and acceptance as a very important step in the process of social change. I emphasized the point that accepting herself the way she was and forgetting the past would considerably assist her in coping and doing away with depression. Though it would appear had to achieve I told her to keep her away from him as this would erode the bad memories and help her to fully concentrate in her job. I also advised her to join the many social groupings in the region which she could attend during her free time and this would also be a very important measure in doing away with mental instability as her mind would be engaged thereby having a lot to share with the group members. I made this an open discussion and answered any question that she had I told her to remain focused and she would get another mate who could be caring, committed and having all the seriousness required in a healthy relationship. On this I told her to be careful and not to rush at things. I reiterated that taking depression tablets would assist because the problem will be recurring as long as she set her mind to the past problems that she went through. I also promised to help establish the contact of her family members back in her motherland so that they would communicate which would assist her greatly in coping with depression. I also advised to save some money out of what she earns so that she can plan to visit her family and consequently for their reunion. I pledged some assistance to see her successful in accomplishment of the same. On the issue of not being well educated I told her there was still room to further her studies and urged her to enroll to any college here in Peru where education was affordable and guaranteed job placement afterward. To get the school fees I advised her to borrow some from her employer which she was to repay in small amount thus equip her serve with enough education to meet the job market demand. After the end of our discussion she appeared happy, satisfied, and composed pouring a lot of thanks to me. My theoretical approach was aimed at doing away with depressive nature of the young woman which appeared to work a case witnessed at the end of discussion where depression appeared to have curtailed. This really matched my plan since my client indicated more signs of improvement and gladly appreciated my services. She later visited me after sometimes and had fully recovered joined the social groupings and made arrangements on how to visit her parents.
