Personal focus vs. environmental focus It may be particularly important to maintain the right balance between personal andenvironmental focus while exploring different issues. For example, speaking of domestic violence one should note that many people are exposed to harsh living conditions, but the above mentioned phenomenon does not happen in each such family (Iwi & Newman, 2015, p. 106). As of juvenile crime, the situation is similar: there are numerous teens that are exposed to teen pressure, but not all of them commit crimes (Lahey, 2003, p. 307). This means that a personal focus might provide suitable information that should be considered while making conclusions about the behavior of the people.

It is obvious that drunk driving is likely to involve a person who have witnessed a similar behavior and might want to copy it. Nevertheless, it is obvious that many people understand the need to refrain from this kind of behavior and do not act this way. In this case, one might note that personal focus is able to provide a better explanation of the forces that drive one’s actions. Eating disorder may be another interesting phenomenon that should be taken into account. Thus, it is highly improbable that people have seen it anywhere; that is why environmental focus may not be really suitable here.

As a result, the emphasis on personal aspects of the problem may be quite helpful when it comes to providing a valid explanation. The follow up question: Is there another element that should be taken into account other than personal and environmental focus?
