Sociology Sociology Introduction The society is composed of diversities. Socialization is the process through which individuals are acclimatized to the values, norms, traditions and behaviors as well as the lifestyle of a community in which they are new. It is a lasting process that involves propagating the cultural values and behavior system to an individual. Education is vital as it enables an individual to attain enlightenment on socio-cultural issues. My high school days marked the peak periods of my social integration.
Education is a tool used to maintain social order in the society. Among its functions include instilling culture in people. Education spreads social values and norms to new generations by enlightening students on cultural beliefs. Consequently, education is a socialization agent. Individuals gain social identity based on the social standards and the regulated behavior they find in school. Students learn the social hierarchy, leadership and cultural status (Ballantine & Spade, 2008).Personally, it is in school where I gained an extensive social identity.
With the diverse students who I interacted, the social gender roles such as what men or women should/shouldn’t do became salient. I also got informed on the values and norms of my culture. The essence of the society and culture as regulators of behavior became profoundly pronounced.ConclusionEducation is a major tool that helped me to understand deeply what is expected of me. I learned values such as discipline and respect; virtues that were highly reinforced in my former school. Education brought it clearly that hard work is a prerequisite if good outcomes are to be achieved.
Gender identity as also became salient as the school I attended was a boy’s school.ReferenceBallantine, J., & Spade, J. (2008). Schools and society. Los Angeles: Pine Forge Press.
