Gender and Life Experience We often hear the word combinations with the word ‘gender’, and today they mostly relate to the things that have to do with gender inequality. Indeed, today this problem is rather important because, nonetheless many people take great pains to equalize the sexes rights and duties, the results are not always positive and remarkable. I, of course, understand that historically men performed primary role in terms of bread winning and family support because they had to do the heaviest work, and this was supported by natural peculiarities – physically, men are stronger than women.
The thing I always argue is that many people today think that a woman’s place is her kitchen and nursery. This may be correct from the point of view of nature, but our society has always been developing changing many things. In this field, life has changed much as well, and now many women can take up the same jobs as men and perform the same activities. The other day I found confirmation to my thoughts. I had to visit the bank in order to clarify some financial words from my credit agreement – the fact that I do not know them does not exempt me from paying my debts, unfortunately.
I was advised by a receptionist, a young woman of about 20 years old, to wait for the general manager as she was the only person who could help me with the paper of such type. Thirty minutes passed quite fast, within this time I managed to have a good look on the bank interior, furniture, and friendly and proper work of the staff. The thing I was curious about was that many employees were relatively young women of whom it is usually thought “why don’t you still have children”. I got the response to my question when I met the general manager.
She came to the bank by car – I do not remember the model, but it was something luxurious and very expensive, and her clothing, jewelry and makeup were the things I used to see only in movies. After she explained to me all the unknown words, I asked about what drove young women to this bank. She replied that she wanted to realize a project based on her experience – her life was a story of rises and falls, and during it she had to prove that she could manage such a big financial structure as her bank.
After reaching her goal, she decided to help other women with the same ideas and thoughts and started employing female students and new graduates to give them opportunity to experience something different than everyday cooking, laundry and swaddling clothes. I need to stress, though, that my position is not feministic – I do not state that women do not need men at all. I realize that even now there are some activities for men only, and I also do not argue that women should take care of their families, homes and to create comfort for all the members of their children and husbands.
The only thing I want to prove is that a woman is not only a cook or a nanny – we can also reach success, we can make and realize our plans, we can do many things men do, and we do it not worse than they.
