In terms of health, before the industrial revolution, the elderly especially in minority groups got a lot of respect because they possessed the knowledge required when handling diseases. The ailing would consult the elderly for medication of various diseases. The elderly used medicating technique passed to them from older generations to self-medicate and also to assist others in the community to get well. The industrial revolution however, brought medicine manufactured from industries closer to communities and as a result people adopted medicine from industries. The industrial revolution led to advancement of the healthcare industry (Richardson & Barusch 2013). The industrial revolution also led to relocation of people to urban centers seeking better lives. The migration to urban areas, adoption of medicine produced in industries and increase in health facilities led to abandonment of traditional medication techniques.
The elderly also had to adopt conventional medicine since it became hard to get herbs for creation of home medicine. However, conventional medication comes at a cost. For the elderly from minority groups it has been a major problem getting treatment in hospitals since most of them do not have pension or savings since their employment was for casual jobs. Most of the elderly in minority groups depend on their children’s income or the social security fund (Hudson 2014: 13). Thus, many of the minority elderly just stay at their homes nursing ailments with the medication they can afford.
The situation is nonetheless set to change with formation of new policies in different states targeting the welfare and health of the elderly. One of the policies adopted by some states in regard to the health of the elderly is offering of waiver for the cost of treatment of the elderly in state-owned health facilities (Hudson 2014:120).
