Christine Scarince has given the simple description of symbolic interactionism; she describes it as a way of understanding how the world works. Symbolic interactionism provides a starting point where it assists in understanding what is happening in Day to day life and experiments. Our behaviors change as we interact with the world, based on the meaning we give to social interaction. In addition to that, symbolic interactionism believes that people behave based on what they believe and not on what is true. Communication and interaction form reality in social interactions. Finally, conflict theory urges that individual and different social classes in the society have differing amount of both materials and non-material. The more powerful a group in the society is it tends to use the power to oppress the less powerful. It states that the society is in a state of unending conflict due to competition for limited resources.
The above theories are further expounded using the two texts: Teenage Wasteland: Suburbias Dead End Kids Donna Gaines and the intersection of power, gender, and sexuality. The text by Gaines is about the four teenagers in Bergenfield who had committed suicide by inhaling carbon monoxide. There were a lot of question to why four teenagers would commit suicide, Donna was also concerned with the increased rise in the teenage deaths, and that is why she decided to have an investigation. Gaines believed that the tragic deaths symbolized defeat for young people (Lachmann and Gaines 2005). In the search for answers and to why the four close friends commit suicide yet they were not romantically involved Gaines dug deeply into the society and what she found was shocking.
