The children are migrants and due to their age and low socio-economic status, they do not possess the knowledge regarding labor laws to protect themselves from these harsh conditions. The problem with agricultural child labor is that there are already laws and acts that protect children’s interests, but it is important to oversee that these rules are adhered to by the farmland owners. There are two policies that need to be implemented in order to alleviate and eliminate forced child labor on these farmlands. It is important to design a systematic audit of every single farmland in the states and create a database of the employees. The audit will take into account the ages of the farmland workers along with the proper immigration document to prevent the migrants from being taken advantage of. There also needs to be mobile medical centers around these areas to help rehabilitate the children, who are greatly affected by the working conditions and to give them a chance to live a better quality of life.
It is important to establish rehabilitation centers for these workers and even schools to ensure they get basic education to help them find better employment in the future. The database should be double-checked from time to time in order to ensure adherence to the law. Moreover, all farmlands should be coerced to sign an ethical trading contract, which legally holds them liable if they do not abide by the labor laws and regulations. Moreover, it is important to have public awareness regarding this matter and motivate retail stores to be more ethical when dealing with these farmland owners.
