In that context, television has indeed been one major invention that has over the years become an intimate aspect of contemporary life. No wonder this amazing invention called TV has indeed been a ready source of entertainment and information. Yet, the sad thing is that TV has in many ways, negatively influenced the lifestyle of the masses.

Today a whole new style of living has developed around this gadget called TV, which has both its good and bad aspects. However, children are the social segment that has been very badly affected by TV. TV has influenced the lifestyles and priorities of children in the current times in varied ways. Watching too much TV badly impacts the health of children, makes them vulnerable to violent programs and shows, and negatively influences their academic performance. TV has an unhealthy effect on the life of young children as it encourages a sedentary lifestyle and prevents them from participating in sports and outdoor activities.

It is a fact that people do often get addicted to TV programs and remain glued to the TV screen to seek entertainment and fun. In that context, children are more susceptible to getting addicted to TV, as they are impressionable and are unable to understand the bad effects of TV. Hence, TV encourages children to lead a sedentary life and many a times they end up becoming ‘couch potatoes’. The time which the children could have spent engaging in sports and outdoor activities gets mostly hijacked by the ubiquitous TV.

The current times have seen a flooding of the households by gadgets like video games, PCs and TV, which collectively encourage a sedentary style of living. The thing that needs to be understood is that TV makes an important part of this baggage. TV not only makes children skip activity and exercise, but combined to varied other compatible gadgets like video games and home video players; TV makes them get addicted to a sedentary mode of living. Thereby, this sedentary lifestyle to a great extent promoted by TV gets reflected in the poor health of children.

Children addicted to TV often tend to be vulnerable to random snacking and evince obesity. This trend often gives way to chronic diseases and health issues amongst children. Hence, there is no doubt that unreasonable TV viewership does has a bad impact on the health of children TV also compromises the psychological health of children by getting them exposed to programs and shows depicting violence and acts of aggression. It is a well known fact that many TV programs rely on violent acts and violent content to entertain their audience.

The thing is that the adults are able to digest such violent TV programs and shows. They do have the maturity to differentiate between fact and fiction. However, it is not the same with children. Going by their innocent and tender mindset, the psychological health of children is badly influenced by the display of violence on TV. Violence in TV programs distorts the sense of reality of children and makes them believe that it is normal to engage in such violent activities, as depicted on TV. This could make children more insensitive and emotionally imbalanced.

The irony is that TV could also be blamed for weakening the academic performance of children, as it is a very strong source of distraction. In the current times when most households have working parents, TV could influence the academic commitment of children, unless they are not guided through adult supervision. The desire to not to miss one’s favorite TV shows and the constant entertainment and thrill provided by TV could make children ignores studies. Engrossing TV shows many a time make children compromise on their academic timetable and schedule.

This neglect of studies encouraged by the distraction offered by TV eventually results in poor grades and a compromised academic performance. The fact that TV happens to be a distraction that is always readily available at home, it gets difficult for parents to prevent children from getting addicted to it. Like any invention, TV is also made to benefit people. However, this invention could also have harmful effects on the health, mindset and academic life of children. Hence, adults in the families should teach children to use TV in the right way.

This will indeed help children stay away from the harmful effects of TV. It will also make them benefit from the entertainment and information they can source from a responsible TV viewing.
