Cultivating good listening skills require the social worker to be friendly and approachable for the client to approach them in search of someone to listen and respect them.

Listening to the elders does not oblige the social worker to blindly agree to what they are saying but use a friendly way to disagree or agree when needed. With time, good listening coupled with friendly relationships results to the establishment of a rapport and the client feels valued since they can freely “exercise choice and control” hence end up demonstrating positive change in improved confidence and enhanced sense of well-being. In terms of communication, social workers are expected to have good connections in order to help the client to build goal and for social workers to use connections to introduce clients to community resources (Min, 2005).

Social workers should understand that the cornerstone of social work profession is self-determination and that the client’s right to self-determination is honoured. For the nurse, autonomy and respect for the worth and dignity of all is the firm foundation on which self-determination is build. Social workers should also use their connections to introduce clients to community resources under the guidance of “knowledge of what client feels, believes, and thinks” (Min, 2005). Social workers’ role in working with the client includes ensuring that the patient is connected to all services that they would need thereby reducing avoidable hospital admissions and minimize the costs of insurance.
