My personal ethics Personal ethics are the foundation of ones moral compass- the internal guide that puts one on check telling onewhat is wrong and what is right. They are the drivers that regulate your actions and to some extent your emotions on a daily basis. Moreover, the ethics maxims one has built his values on are not a developed set of rules given to him or her at birth. They develop and grow with an individual over time and many factors leverage how they are crafted. Just to mention a few we have influences like family, religious beliefs culture and experiences. The cruise of this paper, however, is to talk about my personal ethics based on the influences that I have just mentioned. From an Islamic background, I believe that religious beliefs have affected a lot on my personal ethics. Islam advocates for code of behavior and pumps a sense of purpose of our existence. It also plays a big role in satisfying our spiritual, as well as physical needs. It gives us the feeling of sense of respect and advocates for the sense of goodwill. Through my religious beliefs, I acquire the quality of honesty (Scivicque, 2007, p 1, L 4). Honesty refers to the aspect of moral character and connotes virtuous and positive attribute such as truthfulness, integrity and straightforwardness. I have always been honest to my students and myself and to me it is not just a word of honor but a virtue, as well. I think honesty will help me a lot as professor in invigilating my student especially during their exam time. I will not put up with sleazy acts such as cheating in exams and if so I will take the necessary action by forwarding the student to disciplinary committee. Moreover, I have been very honest to my colleagues- lecturers- telling the truth on what measures we have to put into place to help our department become better than it is now. I will always fair and not at one time have preferences in my class. Whether I will have a relative in my class who will pursue the same field that I teach, I will still mark his or her paper like the other students’ papers in a free and a fair manner. I will award marks where there is a score- I can never allow someone to rip what they never sowed. I believe that student have to work extremely hard to get their scores. I will not favor students based on relationships such as good family friends or on the basis that we worship in the same mosque- in short I will not mix friendship with business. I also have the quality of friendliness: I believe in being so welcoming and making everyone feel comfortable when around me. This attribute will help me so much in my class in the coming future: students will open up during my lectures and share their thoughts that I will easily assess whether they right or wrong. From this, I will also learn a lot more since learning never seize (Gish, 2012, p 230, L5). Moreover, my colleagues will find me very friendly, and I will generate a good rapport with them that they will trust with visitations to their house or homes. A common say goes that cleanliness is next to Godliness. I it has always been my guiding foot and always been a driver to my being neat. I think I will feel comfortable teaching students when am smart, and I would love the thought of some giving me compliments on this account. It will also boosts my confidence whenever am around my colleagues that will be a good thing for my concentration, especially when we are having our school departmental meetings. Being ethical will also help me when I become a professor in being very realistic and rational in my judgments. I will always intervene in solving my students disputes and will counsel them and judge the fairly. As a professor in the SBAU, I know I will meet different races and I will try my level best to evade any thoughts of racism to my students. I also believe in equality: As a professor in the SBAU I know my class will be one diverse one in terms of gender, age and even race. In our culture, we still have this notion that a man is always a champion in whichever thing he partakes (Roth, 2005, p6, L14). However, there are brighter female students that beat the male students. I will give them their rightful marks and without considering the gender aspect. Moreover, most of the female students make a great contribution in the classes that have been as student and I find that very challenging as a man. Family also does affect ethics: it is a vital socio-cultural institution that makes a considerable impact to personality growth. Parents cannot dictate a child’s morality; they are typically the first envoys to administer and voice ethical boundaries for a child. Many parents take the responsibility with much seriousness as one of their critical jobs to pump a right or wrong ideas in their siblings (Scivicque, 2007, p1, L4). When parents caution their kids that lying is wrong, they are building grounds for the kid’s personal ethics. How the parents behave, also have a great impact as well since children are fond of picking up what the elderly people do. They absorb the actions of their family that dictates their morality especially in the future. I remember picking the generosity attribute that I now possess from my father a man that I call philanthropic. He believed in helping people a provision that the holy book of Quran advocates for since it is pleasing to God. I will practice this attribute in my class: for example, sharing all the knowledge, which I will not harbor some for my own personal gain. I will also try to take my students through how to answer my questions. I will encourage group discussions advocating for sharing and highly discouraging selfishness. Moreover, kindness is yet another behavior associated with ethical attribute, a pleasant disposition and care for others. It is a virtue and acknowledged as a value in diverse cultures and religions including my own – Islam. The holy book of the Quran also advocates for this- kindness- to both animal fellow human beings (Peterson, 2003, p 82, L 7). I will practice this attribute in my classes where I will care about my students. Moreover, I will not be quick to judging anyone and will do anything in my power to show that am very understanding. To be precise in my class, I will identify the students who are weak in the unit that I teach. I guess the right term to use on them is slow learners- they cannot keep up with the pace. I will arrange for them to see me at their own private time for guidance and better understanding of whichever topic they might find challenging. To me patience has always been a virtue. Students can be stressful at times: you explain a concept give it your all and then a student still comes up saying he or she is not getting it. A professor might feel like my efforts do not bear fruits in such scenarios, but I thank God with my patience that always guides me I will care for the students and make sure that they eventually understand the concepts. I have also tried to truthful: one attribute that my parents helped me nurture and I remember them always referring to this famous say, “the truth will set you free”. I have taken it seriously ever since; besides my holy book of Quran also advocates for always telling the truth (Peterson, 2003, p 42, L8). They say that trust is earned-I guess it is by always speaking the truth. I will ensure that my students trust me so much that some of them share with me their personal life challenges. I will give pieces of advice and counsel where necessary. I will also make sure that my colleagues trust me as well and delivery in whichever responsibility assigned. I learnt as I grew up that I had to be independent: to do this I had to have some skills that my parents saw it wise to enroll me in for school. When I will have the necessary honed my skills or prowess, I will try to instill the same on my students and to remind them to help their parents as they age- return the favor. Keeping time will always help me with my punctuality to classes and my departmental meetings: this will make me a reliable person and will help in boosting the trust bestowed on me. Ever since my childhood, have been loyal in what you believe in this will help me as a professor in the university to be a stalwart to its provisions and has enhance understanding to not only myself but also my students. Respect will also help me in my teaching and will help me in following rules and laws of the university. Experience can also have a great impact on ones ethics. Events that have occurred in ones life may cause emotional and personal understanding and even cause a paradigm shift in ones beliefs (Scivicque, 2007, p 2, L 6). As a Teacher and Interpreter for deaf students in Alamal Elementary Institute from 1998 to 2010, I gained good verbal and written communication. Thus, it has helped me a lot in practicing my professionalism. As the Director of the Deaf Club in Riyadh during the period 2002-2004, I discovered the essence of helping others. This will be my key driver to caring about my students. Lastly, as a member of the Saudi Society for Hearing Disability since 2004, I discovered being considerate by checking up on the hearing disability patient: the same thing I will do to my students and colleagues if at all or at any time they get hospitalized. In conclusion, my personal ethics will revolve around the holy book of Quran. Islam has been the foundation of my personality, and I could not thank my parents enough for exposing me to a religion with such strong values.
