Running Involvement in Creating Self-Sufficiency for Homeless Individuals Homeless youths are one of the most important segments of the society that seem to be neglected. These categories of youth lack a place to call home and mostly lead a difficult life. They face various problems such as unemployment. This annotated bibliography delineates the various aspects concerning homeless youths to foster understanding of why they live the way they do and the various ways the government and state can help such vulnerable groups. Inoue, Y., Funk, D., & Jeremy, J. (2013). The Role of Running Involvement in Creating Self-Sufficiency for Homeless Individuals Through a Community-Based Running Program. Journal of Sport Management, 27(6); 439-452. In this study, Daniel and Jeremy cover the role of running in creating self-sufficiency for homeless individuals through a community based running program. Running programs are one of the sports that these homeless youths can use to become self-sufficient. Communities can organize different sports in their localities to engage these categories of youths. In the recent years, much attention has focused on sports for development programs as it is viewed as the solution to many socials problems that happen in the society. Some of these sports are designed to help improve the lives of disadvantaged populations across the world such as immigrants and the homeless. The United Nations has also recognized sports as the best avenue to help in the development of goals and peace building. Therefore, the best way that these homeless youths can be able to nurture and even identify their talents is through sports. Running competition allows the youths to participate and through the same, their minds are engaged and even opened up to realize that they have a potential to nurture themselves and become self reliant. The reason for selecting the article is because it is credible and peer reviewed. Its main point of discussion is related to the topic of study. The article is credible because of the intensive research that was done. It expounds on the question raised as it provides a perspective on how the homeless youths can become self-sufficient. It proposes involvement in community games such as running. It also provides a very concrete backing of why running and involvement in sports is a recommendable thing for such group of people. It refers to the reports of the United Nations and other researches already done on how involving in sports help in achieving the goals pursued. McInnes, D., Li, A., & Hogan, T. (2013). Opportunities for Engaging Low-Income, Vulnerable Populations in Health Care: A Systematic Review of Homeless Persons' Access to and Use of Information Technologies. American Journal of Public Health, 103(2):1-24 This article by Keith, Alice and Timothy focuses on the accessibility of homeless people and the use of information technologies for various purposes such as accessibility to healthcare information. Homeless people are among the most vulnerable groups in the society. They experience high rates of morbidity and age adjusted deaths which stand at more than 2 percent times higher than the general U.S. population. These categories of people have limited access to hospital and outpatient services compared to the general population. They are also prone to numerous health complications and most lack or never seek medical attention. The study argues that the challenge to access healthcare has been due to social and psychological barriers to care, feeling of suspicion to medical care, stigmatization and unwelcome gestures. Competing needs such as shelter and food also hinder them from seeking medical services. They also do not have insurance covers and communication infrastructure such as telephones and computers to seek medical care. Many of the studies reviewed suggest that many of these homeless people nowadays have accessibility to information technologies. Because of this increase accessibility, it is important that programs are developed to link the homeless people to healthcare through the internet and their cell phones. This will help to increase the quality of life among this category of individuals. This article is, therefore, selected because it is credible and has wide and concrete information pertaining to homeless population. It provides in-depth analysis of who these people are and how information technology would help them in accessing healthcare. The article uses information from various studies hence increasing its credibility. The topic of discussion relates to the various issues or questions raised in the study. It is one of the ways to empower the homeless by helping them access healthcare. The government and other stakeholders have the responsibility to ensure that all vulnerable groups get better and quality healthcare. Lindsey, E., Kurtz, P., Jarvis, S., Williams, N., & Nackerud, L. (2000). How Runaway and Homeless Youth Navigate Troubled Waters: Personal Strengths and Resources. Child & Adolescent Social Work Journal, 17(2):115-140. This article reports on the ways homeless people and adolescents use and handle various challenges as they mature, and the support they receive from the members of the society. Transition from adolescence to young adulthood is very complex as individuals in this stage experience formidable obstacles. In this qualitative research design, the homeless respondents were interviewed and helped to gain a deeper understanding of the struggles these youths face. The study also provides some of the resources that can help this category of youths to resolve their difficulties and deal with hazards to achieve self-defined successes in their young adulthood. From this study, the most important people that provided help to this category of youths included the family members, friends, and professionals. These people all make a difference in changing the attitude of the homeless. The level of impact of the helpers was based on the trustworthiness and the readiness of the homeless to accept that help. These youths also received different types of help which include caring, concrete assistance, setting boundaries and holding youth accountable, and professional intervention. This article is, therefore, very informative and elaborate in addressing the issues of homelessness. The paper is in-depth and credible as it used a survey of the homeless to gather the information it provides. It is also a peer-reviewed article hence has high levels of credibility. The article hits the nail on the head concerning the questions asked. It provides an elaborate way that the homeless can be helped to become self-sufficient. It also extends to the possible reason why the homeless may not respond to job programs. The homeless live in stressful environments and, therefore, this hinders them from engaging in such programs. If the youths are well supported and advised by the professionals, they can become better people and be able to participate in job readiness programs. Mayock, P., O'Sullivan, E., & Corr, M. (2011). Young People Exiting Homelessness: An Exploration of Process, Meaning and Definition. Housing Studies, 26( 6): 803-826. In this article, the author argues and appreciates the in-depth studies in the homeless people as having helped to address and explore the various aspects that characterize the homeless people. Even with this understanding, the society has not yet come up with appropriate mechanism to help these youths to transition from the statues of homeless. Therefore, the authors explore the processes that surround exit routes taken by these homeless people out of homelessness and the meaning they attach to the housing transitions based on the findings from the qualitative longitudinal studies of homeless people living in Ireland and Dublin. The routes that are considered in transition are independent and dependent exits. These youths require support from various institutions such as family, government, and nongovernmental organizations to help them come out of the homeless situation. Therefore, the authors support in housing as opposed to support for housing in the quest to achieve sustainable homeless exits among the young people. Likewise, this article is credible and is peer reviewed hence is objective. The authors are competent and professional in the area making them efficient and effective in addressing salient issues in the field. The article also covers the appropriate ways to help these homeless youths to exit homelessness. This article, therefore, has also provided answers to the questions exposed. It suggests that these youths be given support to deliberate themselves from the chains of homelessness. They need empowerment to be self-sufficient. Moxley, D., Washington, O., & McElhaney, J. (2012).'I don't have a home:' Helping Homeless People Through Faith, Spirituality, and Compassionate Service. Journal of Religion & Health, 51(20):431-449 The article is based on a personal story of a person who experienced homelessness. The story is touching and also provides various perspectives about homelessness and how the homeless people can be turned or transformed into important people in the society. The homeless should be empowered and their skills nurtured in churches. The church leaders should counsel homeless for them to lead a better spiritual life. These people have lost hope and if they get to hear the word of God, they can be encouraged and elevated even transformed to important persons in the society. According to this article, one of the reasons for people becoming and remaining homeless is because of the mounting issues that emanate from poverty that creates a vicious cycle that erodes their coping and functioning. This article is also helpful and provides more information about the aspects of homeliness. These people are part of us and they require encouragement for them to be self-confident. They are always in crisis thinking of what they would do to accomplish their needs and this state makes them to feel discouraged. The article, therefore, answers some of the questions about the homeless people. They are vulnerable and if they do not get the requisite support from the church leaders and other people such as the state, they cannot be able to leave and stay out of homelessness. It is the feeling of inferiority that hampers them from being aggressive job seekers, making them to be left out on various job openings. Therefore, they can be transformed and become useful members of the society if the populations develop positive feelings and attitudes towards them. Read More
