My Personal Dilemma- A Case of Exploitation As a prerequisite of my degree I was required to earn a 6 week work experience in a relevant field. I approached one of my seniors in school who was now working at a reputed bank and he was very helpful in enabling me to apply for the bank’s internship. After a test and interview I was selected as one of the few interns for the summer, on the basis of my own capabilities. Incidentally, I was put under the same helpful friend of mine. Initially he was very cooperative and explained to me all the necessary details of the work and after a couple of days I was in sync with the requirements.
The workload became too much and required me to work after hours, research, stay up late to track consignments and prepare presentations for him. However, he was wasting his own work hours in social loafing which I could witness. In the end, he passed off the work, which I was doing, as his own, including the research reports and presentations and got significant appreciation for it. On the other hand, I was having a hard time keeping up with the workload and was hardly acknowledged for my efforts.
Under this situation, I was hesitant to seem as an ungrateful person for his initial guidance about the internship details. However, I took an important step and contacted the HR to discreetly transfer me to another department. At the time of transfer, I prepared a list of documents that I had worked on and asked him to sign them off as my work so I can include it in my CV. Upon the completion of the internship, I submitted this list to the HR and was given a certificate of appreciation on my efforts.
