Download file to see previous pages... -Dade is one of the most suicide prone counties in the United States; research shows that suicide attempts are most rampant in youth and teenagers between the ages of 15-24. It is also the third in the list of leading causes of death in youths of this age bracket. Research also shows that the white population in the U.S is the most affected in terms of suicide cases in comparison to other races in the United States. Contrary to belief, the minority races have a higher threshold for bad lack and misfortunes that face them compared to the white population. Most of them are used to hardships and negative outcomes that face them, and thus develop ways of coping with this issues.
Suicide attempts are usually as a result of a loss or lack of self-esteem; African-Americans tend to have a very high self-esteem. A study conducted between the years 2005 to 2010 shows the tally of deaths in Miami Dade County at 42. The graphs below illustrate this results.
The above graphs show suicides of both males and females, as well as teen suicides in Miami-Dade depending on race. The results show that the number of deaths in males (35) were five times more than in females (7). The rates of suicides are in relation to suicides per 100,000 residents. The number of white teenagers that killed themselves (4.1/100,000), was twice the number of black male teenagers who died as a result of suicides (1.8/100,000).
Hispanic males were more susceptible to suicide than non-Hispanic males more than twice the number; (4.4/100,000 in comparison to 1.8/100,000). In the case of females, Hispanic females almost doubled the number of non-Hispanic females that committed suicide; (0.9/100,000 v 0.5/100,000).
