of Pittsburgh Medical Center The of Pittsburgh Medical Center was founded in 1893 and is located in Thomas Detre Hall on OHaraStreet in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh and is connected to UPMC Presbyterian by an underground tunnel. University of Pittsburgh is a private not for profit hospital that provides multiple services to an array of populations from those suffering from broken bones, needing surgery and then those with psychiatric needs. More specifically the psychiatric portion of the hospital has been around for more than 60 years and was better known as Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic.

Currently, the hospital has 400 inpatient beds and 50 ambulatory programs and the institute treats children, adolescents, adults and seniors with mental health and/or addiction problems. As of 2010 there were 372,848 outpatient visits and 11,185 ED visits and this coincidentally is the largest number of people served that has been recorded. At this time there is no specific kind of individual that utilizes this portion of the hospital both men women and children receive services from this hospital.

In the past 60 years the population has not changed according to the UPMC website as it still accepts state funded patients as well as private insurance. This hospital is known as a teaching hospital so the hospital completes multiple different studies on people to gain further understanding of how the mind works. Some examples of studies that have been completed are light therapy for bipolar disorder; ADHD study; Autism Study; Enhancing Mental Health Treatment Engaged and Retention for Older Adults with Depression (ENGAGED); etc.

However the hospital is not known for introducing or specializing in a particular psychiatric treatment. At this time they currently treat agoraphobia, Alzheimer’s disease, anorexia nervosa, anxiety, ADHD, Autism, bipolar disorder, bulimia, dementia, depression, generalized anxiety disorder, intellectual disability, OCD, panic disorder, schizoaffective disorder, schizophrenia, social phobia, and substance abuse. There was a significant reform that did happen in the history of the hospital and that was in 1973.

A reorganization of Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic and the University of Pittsburgh Department of Psychiatry was started and set the stage for UPMC’s eventual mission of clinical care, research and teaching. This reform paved the way for more funding and education to back psychiatric treatment.The only information that was provided about the life in the hospital is geared towards residents/interns working with the multiple populations served at the institute. Due to the significant number of populations served at this facility there was no examples readily available.

The resident/intern during the first year is sectioned into 13 blocks of 4 weeks each and within the rotation the intern spends the blocks within different units of the hospital’s psychiatric units.
