They Came Before the Mayflower” “They Came Before the Mayflower” was a figurative ment used to refer to the group of Americans who had stronger American roots rather than the Puritans who arrived during the Mayflower year. These Americans who are described to have come before the Mayflower came into picture in the American history when black labor has been rampant because of capitalism. The Black Americans or Negroes were primarily seen as a lower race and are grouped in the bottom job as opposed to the high-skilled industrial jobs made available to the White Americans, those considered to be the higher race.

Aside from that, they would have to live with discriminatory policies that promoted slavery, racist practices, and injustice such as not having the right to vote and hold office. Pilgrims, on the other hand, who started getting involved in business with the White Americans when trading practices were at a boom, were also looked at solely by the color of their skin. The arrival of the Black Americans before the pilgrims was significant to gaining religious freedom that America is enjoying today.

This is because of the fact that when the Pilgrims landed in Massachusetts, they simply allowed Protestant Puritan religious beliefs. Thus, since the Black Americans established colonies first, they were able to build havens of refuge for the persecuted religious groups from Europe which gave way to the early American laws that promoted religious freedom.
