In recent years the numbers have significantly decreased. Generally, voting exercises in Canada has attracted low participation (John, 2005). However, the most affected age bracket is between the ages of 18 and 25. This has raised questions on how well the youth are involved in federal activities.

This is because it brings up uncertain population participation in future federal elections. Researchers say that, the youths who fail to participate in political activities when at their youths, they have a very high probability of not participating in political activities when they age. According to Jason (2012) the impact of the youth not participating in elections is not only a problem in Canada but it is also a global challenge. This memo will attempt to outline the possible causes of the problem and give specific solutions.

Several reasons have been drafted as the cause of the youth ignoring political activities. An option is the lack of knowledge on politics (Mads, 2002). It is an obvious assumption that for one to be interested in any activity, one has to have the knowledge on how to carry out the activity. In these modern times, youths spend most of their free time taking part in social activities and hobbies which are rarely in the category of politics. According to Bryan (2008), this hinders their exposure to politics and political activities; thus, create ignorance among them and a don’t care attitude.

Another cause of the problem is that most Canadians do not trust the electoral system. This has been caused by the constant claims of rigging and manipulation. This in turn gives the youths, the picture that their votes will not count or even make a difference (Cameron & Laura, 2010). Due to this, they choose not to vote, to avoid a situation whereby they will feel having been cheated. These claims have also been supported by the fact that there is over dominance of one political group or party.

To curb the problem of lack of knowledge and exposure, the media should be involved in enlightening the youths on political matters. If the media is used positively, it is in the best position to educate the youths and the public at large on the benefits and reasons for voting (Jonathan, David & Michael, 2011). Learning institutions should also provide political exposure to students. If the youth have no assurance in the election system, there is a great likelihood that they will not take part in the voting.

On the other hand, it would be of great importance that they are given a chance for representation in the elections. Inclusion of the youth in the electoral system, would create a situation whereby youthful support would be on the increase. Ultimately, the voter turnout would also increase. The youth should be encouraged to support their own to contend for the top job so as to alleviate the dominance of one party in the political arena. Having a few youthful political candidates, the youths will certainly show up to offer support to a person whom they understand and trust.

It is important that the government undertakes an initiative of modifying the electoral system so that people can have confidence in the system (Blais, Elisabeth, Neil & Richard, 2004). The initiatives will give the youths a chance of representation in high government offices. The initiative to have reforms on the electoral system gives the youth and the Canadian community at large the freedom to exercise their right in justice. According to Blais, Elisabeth, Neil & Richard, (2002), if the youth take part in elections, their needs are addressed through the ballot.
