Tuckman, BW (1965), Developmental Sequence in Small Groups, Psychological Bulletin, Vol. 63, pp. 384-399, (Revised 1977) A brief summary of the text / section and its purpose. The purpose of Tuckman's model is to explain the dynamics of groups. There are four stages to Tuckman's model that all groups proceed through. These stages are: Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing. Tuckman suggest that groups for when people test the boundaries of others. Groups are formed in many circumstances and situations and it is important to discover the inner workings of the group process. The forming stage of the model is the starting of the group where people are joined together to perform a takes or find a solution to a problem in which they are jointly vested. Groups form under different conditions but usually a group forms without given choice of who will be involved or the number of people involved in the group. A group is usually formed to provide a combined effort to achieving a task. Storming is the second stage and it describes the conflict and polarization of group members. As the group starts to find its initial structure there is conflict among group members and this conflict cause the group members to break up into small groups that view the conflict in the same mind frame. The third stage of Tuckman's model is norming. The norming stage is when the resistance and conflict starts to be overcome and the group finds a more cohesive structure. In this stage, group members are likely to express their opinion and the group is starting to get down to the task at hand. The fourth stage is performing. This stage, as the name suggest, is when the goals and the task of the group are being performed and achieved. The group is working smoothly to complete the task and purpose of the group. The roles of the group members are more flexible and the members are more focused on their roles and the completion of the task. The original model left off at the performing stage. The revised model added the stage of adjourning. Adjourning is the ending of the group. The group may dissolve abruptly or gradually after the task is complete. Some group members may feel a sense of morning after the group adjourns. Some members of the group depart as soon as the group dissolves while other members stick around and remain a part of the group for a while prolonging the groups devolvement. What was your initial purpose of consulting the text or source As a social worker student I was looking for a model that would explain the inner workings of a group. I wanted to understand the dynamics of a group to full understand the working of my own group in which I was placed. I wanted to learn and understand the importance of group dynamics so that I could full evaluate my group to the best of my ability at the end of the task. What questions need to be addressed Is the model relevant to my purpose for consulting the source Is the model expressed clearly in terms that are understandable Can I apply the model to my learning and my professional practice Evaluation Phase All theories have strengths and weaknesses. No theory provides a complete account. How is this identified in your chosen text Tuckman's model covers the stages of group dynamics in clearly to allow understanding of the model. I observer the stages in my own group and was able to apply his model to my learning as the group was working through each stage. I discovered that the size of the group was large and probably contributed to the slow start and some of the conflict at the start of the group. A facilitator is very important at the beginning and could help provide direction and focus to the group. Tuckman's model did fail to mention the adjournment of the group in the original model but did revise the model to include this stage later. I felt first hand a sense of morning at the dissolve of the group and saw others remain friends from the group after the adornment. How can the information be incorporated into your study or into personal professional development I will apply the concepts to different areas of my life where group dynamics is involved. I will understand conflict in the group processes and use the understanding to my advantage and the advantage of the group. The model is about understanding the inner stages of a group to provide clear understanding to why situations arise. It helps me to understand groups so future involvement in a group will be more productive.
