During the examination, the results of interventions are often looked at. Sometimes the team may decide that further interventions are required, and may ask the general education teacher to try some other interventions methods to get the team more information that may be important to the student’s case.Sometimes a team may decide that this is the case, and that further information and interventions are needed in order to justify making an official Referral. This does not mean that it is a shut case and that the team will not meet again and reexamine data later, it simply means they f feel they need more time and information to decide for sure if this is a case that needs Special Education or not.

Often after this, the general education teacher will use other interventions methods, some that can possibly even include the parent, to try and asses the situation of the child in the learning environment. The team itself is made up of several different members. These members include the school Principal (sometimes called the LEA),  the Special Education Teacher, classroom teacher the child has had, past class room teachers, and any other people who may have helpful information. Sometimes a parent may be included, but most time one is not.

The pre-referral team is simply a brain-storming team that looks and tried to understand if a child needs special education. The classroom teachers offer the most insightful information and can give the best story of a child’s classroom behaviors, as well as any pertinent information that may have come from interventions that the general education teacher has tried. The Special Education teacher is there to offer their input, but they may or may not have yet observed the child. The Principal is there as the LEA, and any other adults invited are done so on the basis of important interactions with the child they may have had even if it was not specifically through class room instruction.
