GRADUATE ADMISSION ESSAY- MASTER IN SOCIAL WORK What is your motivation for becoming a Master’s level social worker? I am a social worker. However, what is a social worker? As it has been defined, “Professional social workers are concerned with social problems, their causes, their solutions and their human impacts. Social workers work with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities, as members of a profession which is committed to social justice and human rights.” (Reichert, 2003). (Please note this reference came from Wikipedia, please check the link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_work as I have cited on the reference page. From this definition, we can deduce that social work is type of service that is given to the part of society that lacks the ideal setting of a good life. And from this information, it is easy to see that this field of profession is not that common. This leads us now to a question: Why I chose social work? Basically, social work should be a duty of all capable citizens of a community. But then again, one has to undergo years of social work courses at universities. I have a bachelor’s degree in rehabilitative sciences, the reason being why I chose that field is my found fulfillment and pleasure in utilizing my capabilities and assets in working with agencies or with families that are considered less fortunate than I am. I strongly believe that my individual qualities will be further enhanced once I start working in an environment that needs my help, and that requires the qualities that I possess. In addition, I believe that no profession is more fulfilling than helping less fortunate people experience the same treatment rendered to the affluent. It is by profound nature that giving service to others is a very noble work. In our society today, the different traditional fields are so heaping with individuals who, most likely, possess the very same abilities that their colleagues have, and I want to reiterate that I have absolutely nothing against the fields of science, but wish to insinuate that my standpoint in life is that to make better the lives of people in general, one has to start with the people surrounding him. The very problem of society concerning the plight of the souls who had lost their ways and turned astray. This is not just a mere problem of the Social Welfare Department, but a problem of the whole populace, for the plight of people who are out of the right tracks will reflect the negligence of duty of the whole society. I adhere to the proposition that though an individual is only an individual, he still is a component of a community, the community being the component of a city, and a city is the mirror of the country’s soul. My potential contribution, though small, in time will prove to be ample once individuals like me choose this less-traveled path. I choose to pursue masters with the hope that upon earning it, I will be a small but contributing factor in changing the lives of our citizens. What do you think are the most important issues facing social welfare? In relation to society, I believe that one of the most important issues concerning social welfare is the need for good counseling . It is no doubt that our country has the latest technology in matters concerning the medical field. With development and progress being made everyday. But if we look closer at our country’s situation, many people are still not able to avail of the ideal services that should be rendered to the general populace. The services offered by the largest and most prestigious facilities are no doubt costly. Since many of us still lack the ability to utilize the services, many still suffer the consequences of being incompletely treated or being untreated at all. It is sad to think that only because of lack of money that many people have to suffer incompetent medical service. For years, thousands of children die of untreated diseases. The affluent society are the only ones capable of availing these services. But how about the majority of the population. The minority groups who everyday struggle just to make ends meet. With their growing everyday needs, little or no money at all are left for their health care needs. Another important issue that is facing our society is the lack of health care providers. Large hospitals and care providing facilities are well staffed of course. But then again, these establishments that offer the best services are beyond the reach of the poor. Small hospitals on the other hand have to devote their time to provide ample care to poor clients. In addition to this woeful situation is the fact that since many of these small establishments cater to the poor, their medical services are also limited due to financial constraints. A third problem that is confronted by society is the growing population of the infirmed. As time passes by, so does the needy increase in number. It is a possibility that in the future, no amount of service can keep up with the needs of the already swelled population. Where do you see yourself fitting into the social work profession in five years? Being a component of the social work sector and being concerned with the welfare of people, my welfare only comes a close second but it is only right that I myself have plans for my future, and part of planning the future is visualizing what will happen with my life in the future. Five years from now, I see myself as a social worker devoted to the needs of my clients and I would be working in a firm whose priority dedicated to the needs of the poor and the less fortunate, whether it be in rural or urban areas. Specifically, I would be helping the facility in offering effective and low-priced medicines. My main work would be in keeping track of entering and exiting medications and make sure they go the right persons who are none other than the less fortunate people. What kind of experiences have you hand in social services ( as a client, volunteer, paid employee)? As a social worker, I have already experienced many kinds of work in the field of social work. In one of the institutions that I have worked for as a pharmacy technician, I had the duty of entering prescription orders in to the computer. This has got to do with the way the system of distributing drugs are made easier. Moreover, I also experienced assisting pharmacists with filling and labeling prescriptions. This is a very meticulous work since the containers should have the right drug and dose. And it is very important that this work be perfect and sure due to the fact that differences in the drug’s action and dosage, however trivial, when ingested, may lead to grave consequences. In addition to these work, I have also been assigned to prepare the pharmacy medications’ inventory. This also is a work concerned in making sure that the right amount of drugs enter our establishment and also deals in monitoring the flow of drugs in the institution. I have also experienced screening telephone calls for pharmacists. Screening calls is necessary in order to segregate important calls from unimportant ones thus helping in making easier the work of the pharmacy. Aside from these, I have also served in prepackaging bulk medications. Also a meticulous work that I have done is compounding oral solutions, ointments, and cream for patients. Also included in my work is completing weekly distribution center medication orders, placing orders, and verifying all associated orders. And including in my work of supervising medication orders is dispensing all orders. Aside from my experiences in the pharmaceutical field is my experiences in a correctional facility. As a correctional officer, my responsibilities included the supervision of the feeding and recxreational activities of the inmates and staff. Also, I was in charge of maintaining safety and security of the inmates, staff, and the facility. Moreover, I am a member of the Rehabilitative Services Club. As a member, I helped in collaborating with the many activities held in campus. This activities are commonly formulated to raise money for the group. The proceeds in these fund-raising campaigns always went to student scholarships. Another experience I have gained is being a volunteer member at Legend Transitional Care Center in Mc Allen, Texas. As a volunteer, I assisted clients in performing activities of daily living such as walking, dressing, bathing, cooking, playing games. These activities are mainly made so as to empower the patients to reach their highest potentials of being productive and independent. In relation to my expanding experience is the increase in my skills. As a worker for several years, I have become a completely literate person in terms of the use of personal computers. Also, I have skills regarding the application of common office programs such as the Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Aside from this, I also have knowledge regarding vocational testing and work sample administration. Also, I knowledgeable in terms of job analysis and labor market survey. Due to these experiences, I believe and I am confident that I am ready enough to become a full pledged social worker. Going back to the central question, I have chosen to pursue a Master’s level social work because I am in desire of expanding my knowledge. When I become successful in expanding this, I will be able to reach out into more people. By helping them, in every little way I can, I believe that I am making a difference. The less fortunate people of this country needs me as a worker. By reaching out to them, I believe that I am remedying two of the issues that I have stated. One, by becoming so, I will be able to provide the poor with better medical services. In relation to the other issue, by becoming a social worker, I am added to the populace of social workers which we know are to few to render services to every needy person. Stating a recommendation of this paper, I encourage all person who has the calling of becoming a social worker to follow their hearts. Cause I believe, no amount of money can equal a person’s heartfelt service to humanity. By becoming one, together we can uplift the lives of thousands of people asking for our help. Through our work, together we can end injustices turned into mankind. Let us unite for the future of our people. And I state again, our work is one of the noblest ever known. A work that is dedicated to the deprived. A work that is immortalized by its unselfishness and unprecedented service. Reference (2006).
