How would your friends and family react? My friends would be supportive, considering that most can identify themselves with the decision that had confronted me. My family on the other hand would not be supportive because they would feel that they could take care of the child on my behalf. What does this suggest about how we view gender and work? The society views women as the gender responsible for taking care of children and that is why many people would understand. Women are also expected to work especially in the current generation. 2. What are the three elements of domesticity as outlined by Williams (2000)? They are: 1) Employers’ entitlement to demand an ideal worker with immunity from family work. 2) Husbands’ right and their duty to live up to this work ideal. 3) View that mothers’ lives should be framed around care giving. 3. How does the history of domesticity make contemporary life for working women and mothers difficult? Historically, women worked at home and it earned them income. Due to revolutionalization, work done at home turned valueless and women like men had to seek jobs outside their homes. It becomes hard for them to balance work and family since the two places require them and their time. 4. How does women’s employment affect patterns of domestic work? a. Women who work for pay perform fewer hours of housework than homemakers b. Women with full-time jobs do less than those with part-time jobs c. Women do less and men do more as proportion of family income contributed by the woman increased 5. Domestic work, like paid work, tends to be segregated by gender. Describe some key trends in the gendered division of labor in the household. a. Men tend to do outdoor work, women indoor work. b. Women perform almost 80% of all childcare. c. Men tend to get the “good chores”, e.g., tasks done by men more likely to involve personal discretion, have a fixed start-finish, and/or involve a leisure component 6. If women are doing less housework, are men doing more? And if so, how much more? Yes men are doing more. Their increase is by the amount they add to what they initially did that made their share of housework with women be less than half. 7. What did Hochschild (1989) mean by the “second shift”? Who is working it? It is the evening duties of taking care of children that women do every evening after spending their day at work; first shift. It is worked by women. 8. What did she mean when she noted home and work had become “reversed worlds”? This is the way work becomes a haven where people can relax and feel in control, while home becomes a workplace where people feel pressure and frustration. This is due to their time demand whose pattern is opposing. 9. What did Hochschild mean by the “third shift”? Noticing, understanding, and coping with the emotional consequences of the compressed second shift that confronts women as a duty. 10.
