She seemed to be a diagnostic mystery and many of them believed that she was victim of spousal abuse. Her case is a part study of criminology and this paper has attempted to relate her criminal activities to some of the crime theories. Childhood years Karla Homolka was born on May 4, 1970 Port Credit, Ontario. She was the oldest child and had two siblings including her future victim Tammy. She seemed to have a pleasant personality and gained love and popularity among her friends and family. She had an inherent passion for animals which made her work in a veterinary clinic.
Apparently, Karla presented a normal personality and gave no reason for suspicions that she was “hiding deep psychotic desires that had yet to be unleashed” (Montaldo[2], n.d.). Paul Bernardo Homolka met Bernardo for the first time during a pet convention in Toronto. She was 17 at that time and Bernardo was 23. He was smart, attractive and had a charming personality. They had sex on the very first day they met and soon realised that they both had same kinds of sado-machostic desires. As their relationship grew, Paul began to play the role of the master while Homolka became “obsessed with fulfilling Bernardo’s every fantasy” (Montaldo[2], n.d.). . Since the drug remained undetected, her death was concluded as an accident.
With the progress of time Bernardo’s sexual appetite increased and on June 15, 1991 Bernardo kidnapped Leslie Mahaffy. She was repeatedly sexually assaulted by the couple, and was videotaped. Eventually they killed her and “cut her body into pieces, encased the pieces in cement, and threw the cement in a lake” (Montaldo[2], n.d.) which was found four days later by a couple canoeing on the lake. Another victim was 15 year old Kirsten French whom the couple kidnapped from a parking lot of a church.
She was brought to the couple’s home and was humiliated, tortured and sexually abused for several days. The actions were videotaped after which she was killed. Psychology of Karla Homolto The case of Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo fits in the genre of antisocial personality disorder. Homolka was an active and willing companion of Bernardo in all the criminal activities. Their acts of kidnapping, torturing, raping and killing were done without remorse. Homolka persistently presented herself as a victim of spousal abuse.
It was concluded that Homolka had been repeated victim of violence by Bernardo and the frequency of the violence made her numb to the pattern of abuse which eventually made her unable to ascertain the escalation of abuse. In spite of this, instead of choosing to leave her husband and report to the officials, she chose to remain with him and submit to his illegal requests thereby becoming his partner in crime (MacGregor, 2005, pp.4-5). Antisocial behavior The theory of antisocial behavior raises questions like “does victimization produce antisocial behaviors?
Is it possible that people who are
