Reflection on the Homelessness - Book Report/Review Example

Meaning of homelessness ; Homelessness generally a general with persons having no shelter and as such can be related to a cancer eating away hopes and joy of many unsheltered families and also denying them their desired hope to stay within the life assurances for a better living. Within the hospitality environment, homelessness means mush more than inability to access descent and quality housing. Our perspective of homelessness goes beyond this basic understanding of homelessness and integrates social issues such as the lack of emotional and due isolation that is associated with it.

Within this paradigm we view homelessness as deprivation of the basic emotional needs including love, belonging, acceptance and even achievement. Our belief therefore does not only look into the physical absence of the housing facilities that an intangible condition that surrounds the street life and poor families. 2. Community program that addresses homelessness; Homelessness is often associated as a social phenomena that results to anti-social behaviors within the community. Antisocial behaviors lead to unsecure and unsafe society.

From the hotel perspective, problems of homelessness can be taken care of by among other things sponsoring a social care program that caters for the unique needs of these families, and encouraging social inclusion programs at the expense of social exclusion. In this regard, management and employees within a hotel industry all have clear cut roles to play in these steps. The management can on its part, advocate for funding programs geared at social welfare of the surrounding communities and also lobby for other organizational support in creating long term solutions to the identified social problems that lead to homelessness.

Equally, employees have a role in recommending measures to curb social exclusion and participate actively in integrating these victims into the larger society. While accepting that dealing with homelessness issue brings both social and emotional sacrifices to the employees involved in this program, a collaborative effort should thus be put in place where at least every employee feels part of the program 3. Managerial perspective of community support; Managerial perspective should appreciate the concept that homelessness cuts across individual, community and national levels.

Individual has no access to social needs, and exposed to ill-health, unemployment and also poor organization of economic and social activities at the community level. Providing funding programs and opportunities for self advancement where these individuals redefine their role in the community is significant. An open and sustainable social responsibility strategy therefore becomes handy. 4. Addressing the community issue; this involved genuinely identifying unique social and economic needs of the community and actively engaging sustainable strategies to manage the problem. 5. Homeless in the community; from my community experience with homelessness it became evident that this problem is a result of complex social conditions which include families that are dysfunctional, home based violence, poverty, unemployment, mental health problems, negative role models, absentee parents, and social exclusion.

In most instances, there are no single cause to the problem but a complex of factors. Survival becomes reduced to basic means of feeding, or bed or to escape dangers that the street portends. These conditions are dragging communities into dire psychological pains. Most of these people are destitute and require immediate help with an inner desire to have a feel of the better life. 6. Comparing my experiences before and after involvement in the community service; objectively homelessness did not make much sense to me with biased understanding that these people were perhaps responsible for the circumstances they find themselves into and their greed and desire to get sympathy from well wishers, this perception however has since changed, my deeper involvement into the community service has served a significant role in opening the greater part of me.

I have learnt to look at homelessness as problem with social and economic implications for any society. I would stay in the community involvement program as I give my best creativity skills that I constantly learn through interaction with these communities to better their living and widen my scope of homelessness and their unique needs. 7. Lessons from community service that are relevant to the hospitality; the concept of hospitality is about communities, we in get our employees from the community, we serve the community and most importantly we exist in the community.

Once we recognize and appreciate this unique link between community and hospitality then we are well achieving the social and economic desires of any hospitality establishment. 8. Using previous analysis, I have always considered myself as an introvert, quite sensitive to my surrounding, I have a unique sense of feeling and equally of a judging personality. As I ponder through my experience in community service, and the unique dynamics of community needs I will use my judging abilities to determine the causes and the needs of communities, being sensitive to their needs and developing a participatory proactive programs with a unique sense of feeling within the larger organizational context so that we embrace a positive and beneficial relationship between the community and the workplace.
