Types of domestic violence According to a report by UNICEF (2006), physical abuse is a common domestic violence inflicted to women, yet it is rarely reported. Studies have shown that females have continued to be culprits of physical belligerent, mostly instigated by their male counter parts. Mostly, physical violence against women takes the form of arm twisting, strangling, stabbing, slapping, weapon or object threats and to some extent murder (UNICEF, 2006). There are also some traditional practices, termed as physical domestic violence, such as the female genital mutilation.

In Africa, scores of ladies experience physical abuse from the men and the society. Cases of customary practices causing physical harm to women are rampant, yet majority of them go unnoticed. Moreover, females face domestic violence in the form of emotional and psychological abuse. There are numerous studies acting as prove to the seriousness of the distressing and mental violence, in the form of threats to custody of children by husbands, isolation, intimidation and persecution, and home confinement.

Psychological and emotional abuse, have also been reported to involve aggressive verbal confrontation, humiliation and property destruction. Through this form of violence, many women have become intimidated, and their ability to report these violence cases has been hindered. Because of women timidity and compromised personal defense, majority of the psychological and emotional, domestic violence cases are not reported. Furthermore, domestic violence is exacted to women through sexual abuse, and it is not reported in appreciable manner.

Evidently, many ladies are facing threatening sexual coercion, which can amount to rape, yet they fail to report it. There are also, cases of unreported physically forced sexual intercourse and intimidations. Other common sexual abuses directed to women include the forceful unwilling sexual acts either with the abusing individual or other persons. The latter forms of sexual abuse are especially common at the work place (UNICEF, 2006). Even as, women continue facing the humiliating sexual abuses, observations reveal their reluctance in reporting them, which further complicate their circumstances to continued sexual abuse.

Women are being abused domestically through economic abuse. Studies show that females have been on the receiving side economically from history. Gender based issues have especially contributed to this form of violence, flowing down from history. Since from the past women’s ownership of property was notably mired, they have continuously been subjected to be dependent upon the men. Amongst the various factors, prominent to contributing to dependency of women on men, is the negative stereotyping on the part of women and the male superiority that has dominated the society since the past.

Today, women are facing economical abuse through denial of basic needs, biased employment trends, and denial of chances to voice women concerns in policy developments (UNICEF, 2006).
