This is the joy and satisfaction of a contented and happy life by being a mean of assistance and support for others. I have worked as a shadow for a thirteen year old boy who was blind. As a shadow I had to be a support and aid for that boy during his school hours and also help him interact with his peers. Thus, I helped him in moving forward in both his academic and social life. Being physically disabled makes it quite difficult for an individual especially a child to be an equal part of the society like his other age-fellows.
If proper encouragement and support is not provided at such a tender age, these children not only lag behind academically but also lose their self-esteem and confidence. I felt extremely over-whelmed and responsible while being a shadow for that child. I sat with him during his school hours and aided him during any difficult school tasks. I not only encouraged him in his tasks but also tried to make him as much self-secured and independent as possible. After the school hours, I acted as his support during interacting with his age-fellows and class-fellows.
It was very rewarding to see the child feel confident and self-assured in his daily activities. I did not merely fulfill the post of shadow for the child, but tried my best to act as a source of optimism and encouragement for the child. I am pursuing my interest in social work nowadays by working with a group home for men with mental disabilities. This job also requires my services as a social worker and helping the admitted patients with different psychiatric disorders or psychological issues.
I chose social work as my profession because it not only provides me a sense of fulfillment and contentment but also because it compliments my personality and nature quite well. I have a habit of helping the needy and the people in pain or difficulty since I was young. I have an inborn urge to interact with such people and spread warmth and care among them selflessly. I also have very good interpersonal skills. I can very easily mingle with new people and listen to their problems and life stories.
I can make interesting conversations with strangers which is quite necessary in my field. I think I can progress and flourish as a very effective and successful social worker. The reason is not just my love and compassion towards the people in need but I also have an upper hand in dealing with new people and understanding their issues and problems. I also possess a very optimistic approach to life and always keep encouraging and supporting the people around me. Moreover, I also do my relevant homework before volunteering for any support group or any needy individual.
For instance, currently in the mental disorders group home, I make sure that I know the complete history and the details of every patient that I am helping. I observe and notice any past traumas, current improvements and their interests and dislikes very keenly. Working as a social worker in the current group home, I have been exposed to incidences which tested my leadership qualities and I was responsible for various management and patient matters. A social worker has to excel in various areas of expertise as this area of profession does not simply require an urge to help or care for the needy people.
A social worker should be aware of the immense responsibilities he has on his shoulders and in times of chaos or disasters he
