Despite having many supporters through the social media (facebook followers), media, many visitors during the exhibition activities and strong word of mouth, many pets continue to face problems. The ‘new no kill movement’ aimed at saving the homeless pets, but there are still a number of pets who are homeless and abandoned. The major cause of the PetRescue current situation is the fact that some people do not have the burden of supporting and caring for the pets because they do not see the essential of having pets around them.
The organisation is facing a problem with insufficient finances where majority of the projects of sheltering abandoned pets are not well funded, thus challenge when planning for the available finances. After a conduct of a primary research, PetRescue discovered that people do not understand the importance of having pets at their homes and treating them well. This is because majority claim not to have enough finances to offer the required support to the pets and some not feeling comfortable when living with pets at their homes.
Some people assume that pets are just like any other animal who should not be treated in a friendly manner because they have negative thoughts about animals being different from people and not supposed to interact with people. The organisation found that some people do not have time to spend with their pets. Majority of the interviewed people stated that the services offered by the organisation were worthwhile, but they did not have the required support. Many homeowners could claim to understand the need for rescuing and saving pets but they failed to understand why they should adopt pets.
Some people claim not to treat pets friendly because of their bad behaviour, for instance the dog, which barks and can misbehave in front of people. It is clearly understood that there are many abandoned pets outside there because of people not having the burden of wanting to live with pets and support them by taking good care of them. A number of groups and volunteers are currently offering the necessary support by financing the organisation to be able to shelter the rescued pets effectively.
To resolve this situation, there have been campaigns conducted in Australia trying to educate people to change their attitudes towards pets. This also increases awareness on the importance of housing abandoned pets. PetRescue website can be viewed since it has all information required by people wanting to understand more about pets and what is required to adopt and live with a pet. PetRescu is supposed to work harder and conduct more campaigns in different regions for people to adopt pets in their homes and treat them well (Ling, 2011, 13).
Key public(s) and stakeholder(s) The major publics of more interest in the organisation are homeowners; individuals and institutions regardless of the region around Australia. The animal welfare organisations are key publics because they are associated with the welfare of all animals including the ones categorized as pets (PetRescue, 2015, 1). Different city councils in Australia are vital publics who should ensure that pets are not mistreated or abandoned around different cities (D’Aniello, Scandurra, Prato-Previde, & Valsecchi, 2015, 70).
The homeowners having adopted pets should be offered support through information on how to take good care of the pets and what they should provide to pets when feeding them. Different communities, as well as other stakeholders like the government and non-government organisations, as well as opinion leaders concerned about animal welfare should extend their concern on the abandoned pets and help the organisation resolve its current situation. The public and stakeholders should change their perceptions about pets and encourage the public to adopt and shelter pets.
