Both Parents Working Student’s Name: Institutional Affiliation: Date of Submission: Both Parents Working Introduction The issue of whether one or both parents working in a family often has great influence to the life of a child/children in that family. Children grow up in a family setting right from infancy, teen, adolescence before they get to live by themselves as they enter into adulthood. This stage is a very important stage to an individual for it translates into a child’s performance in school and other areas. The family is made up of a relationship between parent to child, child to parent and among parents (Anne, 2004). When both parents work, it may imply more earnings that may better the living standards of the family. This may be looked at from the other perspective, that the family doesn’t grow well and healthy when both parents work because effective parenthood to a family is tagged to the availability of parents for themselves and for the family; whereby by both parents working implies that the children and family responsibility will not be prioritized, thus the family would suffer. The background of parents often would significantly influence how the parents carry out their parental duties. How parents carry out their family responsibility is significantly influenced by their own background. This would consistently affect how the children will be raised up. Families that are raised well are parented well by both parents who work and manage their families and children very well. Advantages of Both Parents Working The children raised by both parents who are working and were raised in good environments tend to do well than those who were raised by parents who were grew up in bad environments. It is also essential to recognize that parents play a pivot role in the raising up a child. A parent(s) would influence greatly a child’s perception about life, their confidence levels, and their values of life. The common say that ‘Parents are next to God here on earth carries enough weight’, for a child gets to trust his/her parents at the early stages of life, this is as early as at infancy. Psychology theorists such as Sigmund Freud, attributes in his theory ‘psychosexual theory’ that a child gets to have strong attachment to the parents after birth and it’s the school processes that snatches him/her away from this strong bond with the parent. This by extension shows that a child learns a lot from parents for they have created some kind of trust relationship from the early stages of life (Anne, 2004). A significant aspect about effective parenthood is that children get to learn more from the non-verbal behaviors of the parents than what they are told. Both parents working may be an avenue that teaches the virtue of hard work into the family members. They learn to appreciate that hard work pays when the outcome of the work of both parents is channeled to meet the family expenses and demands. When both Parents are working and are positively contributing to the family growth and development, then it may portray how they were raised up. It often implies that they were raised up with working attitudes; however we cannot rule out that we may have those with bitter pasts, who are likely to behave in two extremes that would influence their children. As much as it is important that a child be raised up with the real life the child is going to face in life. Success in one’s family life of a child is depended on how flexible the family is to life demands. It is essential that both parents be in the front line in the provision of proactive leadership in the home despite them being involved both or not at work (Lisa, 2004). Parents should reward and appraise for positive things done, plus remember to punish wrong doings despite being both involved with working. A parent should provide for the needs of the child without forgetting to remind the child that at times there is lack. Parents should explore the potential of his/her child but remember to outline to the child the importance of hard work. Parents ought to love their children but to an extent that they cannot correct these children when they are on the wrong. In other words, it is very important for parents to bring up their children not in a ‘plastic manner’ but in a way that these children would live in harmony with the wider society when they get out of the family setting. Disadvantages of Both Parents Working When both parents are working; it certainly cannot be delinked with their lack of sufficient times to spend with their families and this negatively affects on the ideals the family member particularly children grow up with. In extreme situations, when the jobs re much involving, the children may lack role models from the parents and thus resort to media and other avenues that may wreck their social, academic and spiritual growth. This is because good parenthood is a treasure to a child and to his/her growth and development. One cannot detach how successful of unsuccessful one is with how he/she was raised up by parents. It is parents who first teach a child what life is, it is the parents to expose the child to learning and schooling process. It is parents who expose a child to learn virtues such as morality. The same parents also expose to the child to know the difference between what is good and what is evil. In addition to these, it is a parent who exposes to the child vital aspects such as growing up with the ‘walk with God’. Parents teach their children general virtues that would make them exist among the wider community (Robert & Sam, 2009). When both parents work, it may indirectly affect the following in a negative manner: (i) They Affect Educational Performance of Children at an Early Age When a child has just began the schooling process, he/she needs a lot of encouragement, guidance and follow up by the parents, even more that the teacher; for the child has an intimate relationship with the parents. When both parents are working, often they do not have time to comprehensively guide the children or family members into the matters of learning; through may be taking the child through playful remedial homework or tasks given at school. A research was undertaken in 2010, at the University of Leeds that concluded that the contribution that a parent plays towards the educational achievement is vital. In fact the findings went ton to advance that it played a more significant role than that of the school or child. The findings advocated that effort parents make towards a child’s educational success is more important as compared to child’s own effort, therefore when both parents are working and their time is snatched away from the family this may negatively affect the family. Effective learning and development of family members occurs when both parents were found to get involved in the learning process of the child as opposed to just giving the school pressure in giving quality education to the child. The research found no exact reason why schools do better where parents came from a privileged backgrounds; however it suggested that it may be because parents raised in bad environments were more vocal in asking the schools to do well as opposed to the parents with good background who were not vocal but invested in giving the best to their children (Datta, 2007). Secondly, the negative consequence of both parents working may be associated with the stress levels and depression in the family. Rational thinking will expose that when both parents are working, then the family has more resources and thus low levels of stress but this is often not the case. Previous studies shockingly have indicated that stress is recorded highly in families with resources than those without. When both parents are working and they cannot manage the resources well then stress comes in and if the situation is not well managed it may grow to Depression in family (Robert & Sam, 2005). Conclusion In conclusion, it can be said that parents play a crucial role in the raising up of a family. Family responsibilities are many and often are accompanied with two demands that leave parents at a fix. One is that it needs funding to be operational and to run smoothly, this may imply that both parents may find it necessary to work so as to meet this demand. However, beyond that family needs the availability of the parents to their family members so that they can closely monitor the progress of the family as well as closely advise, and guide them. This calls that often, at least the presence of one parent is needed by the family, and this may call for only one parent to be actively involved with work. Weighing the advantages verses disadvantages of both parents working; I may say that to run the family setting whether at work or not requires devotion to application of wisdom. Families that are raised well are parented well by both parents who work and manage their families and children very well. References Anne J. (2004). Raising Good Children.
