As much as it is important that a child be raised up with the real life the child is going to face in life. Success in one’s family life of a child is depended on how flexible the family is to life demands. It is essential that both parents be in the front line in the provision of proactive leadership in the home despite them being involved both or not at work (Lisa, 2004). Parents should reward and appraise for positive things done, plus remember to punish wrong doings despite being both involved with working.
A parent should provide for the needs of the child without forgetting to remind the child that at times there is lack. Parents should explore the potential of his/her child but remember to outline to the child the importance of hard work. Parents ought to love their children but to an extent that they cannot correct these children when they are on the wrong. In other words, it is very important for parents to bring up their children not in a ‘plastic manner’ but in a way that these children would live in harmony with the wider society when they get out of the family setting.
Disadvantages of Both Parents Working When both parents are working; it certainly cannot be delinked with their lack of sufficient times to spend with their families and this negatively affects on the ideals the family member particularly children grow up with. In extreme situations, when the jobs re much involving, the children may lack role models from the parents and thus resort to media and other avenues that may wreck their social, academic and spiritual growth. This is because good parenthood is a treasure to a child and to his/her growth and development.
One cannot detach how successful of unsuccessful one is with how he/she was raised up by parents. It is parents who first teach a child what life is, it is the parents to expose the child to learning and schooling process. It is parents who expose a child to learn virtues such as morality. The same parents also expose to the child to know the difference between what is good and what is evil. In addition to these, it is a parent who exposes to the child vital aspects such as growing up with the ‘walk with God’.
Parents teach their children general virtues that would make them exist among the wider community (Robert & Sam, 2009). When both parents work, it may indirectly affect the following in a negative manner: (i) They Affect Educational Performance of Children at an Early Age When a child has just began the schooling process, he/she needs a lot of encouragement, guidance and follow up by the parents, even more that the teacher; for the child has an intimate relationship with the parents.
When both parents are working, often they do not have time to comprehensively guide the children or family members into the matters of learning; through may be taking the child through playful remedial homework or tasks given at school. A research was undertaken in 2010, at the University of Leeds that concluded that the contribution that a parent plays towards the educational achievement is vital. In fact the findings went ton to advance that it played a more significant role than that of the school or child.
The findings advocated that effort parents make towards a child’s educational success is more important as compared to child’s own effort, therefore when both parents are working and their time is snatched away from the family this may negatively affect the family. Effective learning and development of family members occurs when both parents were found to get involved in the learning process of the child as opposed to just giving the school pressure in giving quality education to the child.
The research found no exact reason why schools do better where parents came from a privileged backgrounds; however it suggested that it may be because parents raised in bad environments were more vocal in asking the schools to do well as opposed to the parents with good background who were not vocal but invested in giving the best to their children (Datta, 2007).
