Extract of sample "Free Distribution of Bed Nets Treated with Insecticide to Pregnant Women"

The sampling strategy of the said research focused on pregnant women going to Bomoi maternity in Kinsaha wherein 855 LLINs were distributed to eligible women but only 362 women were randomly chosen (Pettiflor, 2009).  Based on this description of the methodology, the random sampling procedure was not clearly indicated.  Also, the review of related literature should have been made to indicate a clear basis of the methodology applied in the study.  Another point that can be improved on in the sampling strategy of the research is the increase in the number of sample population which is one of the main prerequisites in standard scientific research (Bhattacherjee, 2012; Wilson, 2012).

In the study, the researchers focused on one medical institution in determining the answer to the research problem.  Based on standards, the validity of the results can be questioned if there is a limited number of samples in the population, and in this case, only a single institution was focused on when the research indicated a study that focused on pregnant women in Kinshasa.             To be able to present a clear sampling strategy, it is important to focus on the significant points and requirements in a standard scientific research methodology.

Included in these requirements is the use of random sampling which eliminates bias, increases the sample size of the given population, and following the rules in relation to the ethical aspect (Bhattacherjee, 2012; Wilson, 2012).  In the said research then, the first modification is the inclusion of other medical or pregnancy-related health institutions within the place under study.  This will improve the validity as well as increase the sample size of the study.  A clear method of random sampling such as the use of random numbers can be applied to choose a representative population within the eligible pregnant women.

A clearer data collection procedure is also needed. In the research process, the use and set up of the LLINs in each person’s household became a variable. In this case, the interview decreases the validity of the result, thus, one method that can be undertaken is visiting the subjects at home and recording observations to lessen the subjectivity related to answering the questions.  The last part of the research should also be based on the statistical analysis of the data gathered.
