A Strong Foundation for Progressing in Life I am very proud of the contributions I have made to the communities I have interacted with. From an early age, I recognized that my community was the support structure that provided my family with a strong foundation for progressing in life. I have always believed in sustainability and the need to build communities that can not only survive but flourish in the long-term. Everywhere I have been, in high school or college, I have tried to make a difference in the surrounding community by volunteering or donating to make life easier for people.

I also strongly believe that problems in a community affect people in and outside it directly and indirectly. I come from a very conservative community that upholds values and traditions that have played a huge role in defining me. When I was in high school, I volunteered in a non-governmental organization (NGO) that recruited young people to improve the cleanliness of neighborhoods. The sanitation conditions in my community used to be very poor, but after joining the NGO and working together with my colleagues, we were able to restore the environment and make it more sustainable for people and animals.

I was motivated by the need to make a difference, and I still am. I still volunteer whenever I can, knowing that doing so helps other people who may are not in a position to work or engage in physical activities (Stewart 19). When I was in high school, I was made aware of an essay competition in which a neighborhood of the winner’s choosing would receive free supply of stationery and basic commodities for a year. I registered and wrote the winning essay, hence making my neighborhood the recipient of the prize.

I was very proud of this achievement because there were many people in my neighborhood that needed the items that were provided. Children whose parents could not afford to buy stationery and families that struggled to buy food and other basic items were relieved of those burdens for a year. Although this did not solve the problem permanently, it made people aware of the power of education and the change it can bring in the society. After completing high school, I got temporary employment as a community mobilizer with a community-based organization that worked with young people to take care of the elderly.

Through the organization, we managed to provide every household in the community with important items such as food and clothing. We also fixed houses, cleaned the neighborhood on a regular basis and conducted awareness programs on gender sensitivity, education, vaccination, maternity care and sustainability. With assistance from the organization and other donors, we also formed a community security initiative that helped to manage security challenges and reduced the crime rate by 50% compared to previous years.

By the time I went to college my community was positively different. All children were taken to school, people had learned the rewards of tolerance and sensitivity and the development projects we initiated were still running. In summary, I am very proud of the change I managed to bring in my community and others. I will continue making positive contributions to any other communities I interact with so that the state, the country and the world can become a better place. Work CitedStewart, Mark A.
