According to the Economist Intelligence Unit’s report on the status of democracies in the world, in 2014, almost 70% developing states’ democratic governing systems were characterized as the “flawed democracies.” According to the report, deficiencies in the governing process, electoral system, political culture, and civil rights have played a crucial role in failure of democracies developing states. After the end of the World War II, especially during the Cold War era, western powers were engaged in aggressive promotion of democracy in developing and third world countries.

During the period, democratic peace theory, which was introduced by Immanuel Kant in 1795, emerged as the widely recognized theory in the global politics and academic spheres. This theory is the core of western promotion campaigns of democracy in developing states. According to the theory, democracy plays a vital role in development of economic stability, security and peace. The theory further claims that democratic states are usually peaceful and comparably less war-oriented. Therefore, it is assumed that the larger the number of democratic states in the world will lead to the less possibility of war and the greater assurance of social and economic stability and peace in the society.

On the basic of various scholarly researches and available data, the present paper provides numerous pieces of evidence that will cast serious doubts on the validity of the democratic peace theory. In other words, by confuting the major assumptions of democratic peace theory, the paper exposes the failure of democracy in developing world and argues that only the potential spread of democracy won’t lead to more secure world, rather flawed and unmethodical promotion of democracy can lead to more instability and insecurity in the world.
