The American City Business Background information of the United States America existed since 1776, after the signing of the treaty in Paris by their colonies Britain. It became a new nation called United States of America. During the 19th and 20th centuries, more states were added to the existing 37 states to total up to 50 states. A continent known as North America came into existence. North America borders both the Pacific Ocean and North Atlantic Ocean in between Canada and Mexico. The United States as abbreviated US or USA Government has a constitution based on federal republic with a strong democracy tradition practiced. Among the states, each has a unique legal system implemented except Louisiana that is based on English common Law. The American population is approximately 307 million people. The population comprises of major ethnic groups coming all over the world (Chicago Business Journal 98). Foreign policy of the United States The foreign policy implemented in the United States is ways the country interacts with other foreign nations. Standard of interaction is set in organisations, corporations and citizens as individual. The United States has set goals regarding foreign policy. Such are stated in the Agenda on Foreign policy of the US Department of State. The goals ascertain building a sustainable democracy. The prosperous life to benefit the people of America, as well as the international community. From the Foreign affairs House committee, export controls are some of the jurisdictions. Such mentions the proper use of nuclear technology and measures taken to safeguard business associated by America abroad. Agreements on international commodity, education and protection offered to American citizens abroad are stated on the policy. Moreover, the foreign policy faced lots of criticism both domestically and abroad as well praise in other regions. The said policy gets consent and advice of US senate. The president has a role to negotiate treaties regarding foreign nations. Treaties are implemented upon ratification from two-thirds of the senate. The president is the commander in chief of the United States Armed forces. He / she have authority over armed forces. However, the congress only has power to declare war. The foreign affairs docket is headed by United states Secretary as foreign minister. He /She has a role of conducting diplomacy. The president appoints both Secretary of state as well as Ambassadors upon advice and consent from the senate. Moreover, the congress has the authority of regulating commerce with foreign countries (Chicago Business Journal 98). American Trading Partners According to report of December 2011, United States partners on trade have a representation of 73.9% as US imports and 71.7% as US exports. However, the figures do not include foreign direct investments. From the US partners on trade, Canada is ranked the largest in exports to America whereas china leads in imports in terms of billions of US dollars. The European Union is the largest partner that trades with America on a single economy basis. Goods were worth $368.8 billion going to US and $268.6billion of US goods going to the European Union as of 2011 report. More so United States remains the primary export and import of several countries. United States comprises a mixed economy with maintained stable overall GDP growth rate, the unemployment rate, capital investments as well as high level of research in place. The US possess abundance of natural resources, properly developed infrastructure and high productivity. The US is the world third-largest country which produce oil and the largest producer of natural gas. Currently, the country is the second largest trading nation behind china. Moreover, the country has been the world’s largest national economy since the 1890s.From data obtained in 2010,, the country has remained the world’s largest manufacture. The country has diversified the economy in terms both as large and small companies in a variety of industries and services. Despite small in comparison with other sectors of the economy, American agriculture is well developed and highly diverse. Due to varying climate, soil and rainfall across the country a number of crops cultivated. Citrus products best suits Florida and areas of California while Midwest favours the growing of wheat and corn. Main crops found are wheat corn, fruits vegetables and cotton. The main livestock products are beef pork and dairy products. The United States remains a dominant in industrial power all over the world. Like other economic sectors, the industry in the United States uses a sophisticated technology. Although the industry declined in relation to other sectors, steady growth is experienced. In 1999, industry growth was 3.4% percent. The leading industries are petroleum, motor vehicles aerospace, steel, telecommunication sector, chemical, electronics consumer products and mining. The industry employs 24.5 percent of America working population. Recent trends in the industry increased diversification and consolidation of companies. Larger corporations absorb other companies to reduce competition and penetrate into new markets. In 1997, business mergers were rampant in the United States. Mergers were mostly done in industries such as oil and natural gas processing and medical equipment. American industry has also branched into new areas. For instance, companies such as General Electric do not only concentrate on manufacturing, but have diversified into other economic sectors such as financial services, and telecommunications (Chicago Business Journal 98). The US economy has faced economic downtown recently due to the financial crisis of 2007-2008. International relations These entail relations among countries, sovereign states role, non-governmental organisations (NGO) and multinational corporations (MNC). International relations are positive as it formulated policies of a given state as it offers disciplinary in the field. The office heading international Affairs of the US Under the department of the interior supports and coordinates the international activities; the body undertakes the US missions in advance and strengthens foreign policies of US as a priority. The Bureau exists in over 105 countries on which covers conservation and management of wildlife and other natural resources scientific research and monitoring of natural hazards such as earthquakes. The American senate plays a key role on international relations. The constitution gives power the president to make treaties, but the president must thereafter submit them to the senate for approval by two-thirds vote. The committee has a role of evaluating nominees to the state department (Chicago Business Journal 98). The current administration and congress of united state prides of being global leader on human rights. To achieve the goal, United States signed and ratified human rights treaties. These majorly cover on international conventions that relate children, women, persons with disabilities and torture. Recently the United States of America signed a treaty with Russia federation on measures for further reduction and limitation of strategic offensive arms. The arms Trade treaty (ATT) is an internationally recognised treaty to regulate the trading internationally in conventional arms. The United Nations implemented the treaty. The United States is among nations to sign the treaty. The United States incorporated with other partners in negotiations to secure treaty to improve global security and respect national sovereignty and ensure legitimate trade of arms (Chicago Business Journal 98). The treaty did not constraint the testing and development of planned US missile defence programme. In order to encourage proper implementation of the treaty provisions the parties established a commission on bilateral consultation that meets at least in two years in Geneva. United States is among the Security Council members under the United Nations. Vote adopts most resolutions in the Security Council. Draft resolutions must receive an affirmative vote of nine members of the council that includes votes that concur from the five permanent members whereby United States is appears (Chicago Business Journal 98).
