Man of Marble Film - Movie Review Example

Movie review: Man of Marble Man of Marble (1976) is a movie based on the communist rule in Poland. This movie is a great example of typical Andrzej Wajda work. All of his films are based on Polish politics. His main objective is to educate the youth of Poland about the history of the country. The film can be characterize as arobust argument against the Communist government in Poland and demonstrated the control that the government had over people and the degree of censorship was placed on the artist.

Man of Marble is entirely based on the Stalinist times in Poland. Birkut is a brick layer whoselected by a filmmaker, Jerzy Burski (Tadeusz Lomnicki) to star in an advertising film in which he with four others laid 28,000 bricks in 8 hours. This represents "collective working" which symbolized the nature of Communist strength. In this film, the character of Birkut demonstrates the face of the common men, symbol of all common workers in communist Poland. There are three distinct kinds of scenes in this movie - the black and white documentary materials of 1950s, basic accomplishments of Socialism and the idols of the working class.

There are also numbers of sections from the 50s shot in color, displaying the exact situation of that time. The third types of scenes are about the actual trouble face by Agnieszka and her team in 1970 while doing this documentary. From a broader perspective, Man of Marble is a remarkable sample for the blend of diverse messages and subjects in a single film. Both the characters Agnieszka and Birkut are full of optimism and modest in their rigid approach towards the scope of the politics. The significance of this movie lies in the demonstration of the difference among the black and white publicity footage and the colour realism shots which help to expose the temporary nature of political reality.

There are two scenes worth mentioning regarding the role played by the movie to demonstrate the political nature of the country. One is about showing Birkut coming out of jail and casting his vote in the elections and encouraging others to do the same. In that part of the movie, there is a clear description about the development of the country under communist rule. . The second scene is about the demonstration of the economic achievement of socialist Poland shoot in colour with the presence of background disco music.

That disco music is the clear indication of the growth and development of the country under communist rule. From the point of view of above two scenes if we analyze the two main characters of this movie, it is very clear that both of them are very effective and distinct in nature. The character of Krystyna Janda is pushy and manipulative in nature where she can go up to any limit to get her work done. On the other hand, Radziwiłowicz is more childish and innocent type. In the movie, in certain parts when it is very clear that people are not standing behind him, he is finding it hard to choose between friends and enemies.

When it is not clear that whether, Witek (Michal Tarkowski), one of his coworker is a spy or not and moreover whether he is responsible for the injury of Radziwiłowicz, he still stand by him. This scene and his act is a clear indication of the communist nature of people standing by each other in Poland. But as the controversy started to grow, slowly people started to go against him and the movie represents how an innocent bystander caught in between a political storm.As discussed above, Man of Marble is a really a political film, not only due to its content, but at the same time the conditions or situations of its making, implication of censorship in its broadcasting, the inner meaning associated with its dialogism, the amount of reception the film has received from the audience in Poland and world over, the criticism from the politician, socialist and others, and most importantly due to Wajdas promise to demonstrate a moral idea and that was to tell the truth.
