 In the modern society today, abortion seems to be part of the normal lives of women. In the United States alone, for the period 1973 to 2011, there were 54,559,615 abortions that have been committed[Min12]. Data from the Guttmacher Institute reveal that eighteen percent of U.S. women obtaining abortions are teenagers; those aged between fifteen and seventeen obtain six percent of all abortions; teens aged between eighteen and nineteen years old obtain eleven percent, and teens younger than age fifteen obtain 0.

4 percent[Gut11]. These figures are quite alarming as they are signs of the declining moral standards of people today. There are several reasons why one believes that abortion should not be allowed. Abortion does not give the baby in the womb a chance to live; thus, it is unacceptable in most religions. All preborn children should be treated equally regardless of the health of the baby or the circumstances surrounding the conception because they are all precious in the eyes of God[Humnd].

Another reason why abortion should not be permitted is because it is used by some women as a birth control measure. Abortion somehow promotes infidelity because it makes it easy for other women to engage in illicit sexual relationships and then later on turn to abortion to avoid the responsibility of parenthood[Ilond]. Abortion may lead to some medical complications and has some psychological effects on the women who undergo it. The medical risks in abortion include sepsis, recurrent miscarriages, cervical tears, retained pregnancy tissue, severe heavy bleeding, uterine perforation, bladder and bowel damage, and severe infection.

After an abortion, a woman may feel depressed and guilty. One agrees with the view of the Human Life International that only when “the mother's life truly is threatened by pregnancy (such as with cancer of the uterus or ectopic pregnancy), she may undergo an operation whose purpose is to save her life, even though the preborn child dies as an indirect result of the procedure”[Humnd]. It is important to note that the procedure here is not abortion rather an operation to save the mother’s life.

If one looks at the reasons why women have abortions, it can be concluded that these reasons are not exactly justified. According to the The Alan Guttmacher Institute, Perspective on Sexual & Reproductive Health in September 2005, approximately seventy-four percent of women in the United States have an abortion because they believe that “a baby would interfere with work, school, or other responsibilities and that they cannot afford to have a child”[Min12]. These are reasons of people who are immature and selfish.

In the first place, why is it that they did not think about how a child would affect their lives, even before engaging in the sexual act? Other women justify the act of abortion because they have relationship problems with their husbands or partners. These women obviously do not value the life of a child. They view the baby as a burden that will make their lives more miserable, which was actually miserable already prior to the existence of the baby in the tummy. It is as if they are putting the blame on the child for the wrong decisions that they have made.

Abortion has been legalized in several states of the country. Others claim that it is the right of every woman to decide whether to abort or give birth to a child. But no matter what other people say, one is convinced that no one, not even the mother of the child has the right to decide the fate of her child. The laws that must be passed by the government should give importance to the right to life of every child.
