How harsh could he be in treating the slave? How control maintained? The harshness of treatment could be deduced from the information that disclosed the need to check on the chains of the slaves in prison. By binding these slaves in chains, it reveals that the severity of treatment parallel to animals was still rampant during those times. Control was therefore maintained through direct inspection of work and responsibilities being done, as expected, from the foreman. Further, by demanding hard labor, treatment is also considered harsh and restricts time for fun or games.
Through hard labor, slaves are expected to be too exhausted to indulge in any other forms of entertainment and would therefore immediately resort to rest or sleep. Finally, the need to assign a female companion for the foreman to assist and ‘keep him in bounds’ and restrain him from going to the city or weekly market is also another form of control.Work Cited“From Columbella, On Agriculture.” Book Title.
