Download file to see previous pages The disappearance of the dinosaurs is in some ways a great mystery. During the time the dinosaurs lived, many new kinds developed and other older kinds died out. Not all kinds died out at once, but by the end of the Cretaceous period, the last of the dinosaurs had disappeared. Scientists have proposed several theories to explain the disappearance of the dinosaurs. There are two main theories of Dinosaur extinction as follows: the Asteroid Theory. In 1980 the asteroid theory was proposed by Luis and Walter Alvarez. This theory is based on the discovery of unusually high concentrations of the rare metal iridium at rock levels close to the level of the last dinosaur remains. Iridium is more common in meteorites than in rocks found in the earth's crust. According to this theory, a large asteroid crashed into the earth about the time the dinosaurs disappeared. The force of the collision caused a huge cloud of dust to circle the earth. The dust blocked the sun's light for as long as five years. This killed many plants, and without food, the dinosaurs died too. ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

Origin of flight of dinosaurs
...?The Origin of Flight in Dinosaurs The origin of flight is a topic that has been widely debated since the Ancient Greeks, and is one that has not yetbeen fully understood. There are several anatomical developments in modern birds and paleontological discoveries, such as the furcula used for skeletal bracing (Hui, 2002) that can be used to discover how flight is possible and give clues as to how the skill evolved. Using two main theories, it is possible to speculate whether flight evolved from the tree down (from a jumping, gliding, arboreal ancestry) or from the ground up (from a bipedal, leaping, cursorial ancestry). In the course of this essay, these two hypotheses will be discussed and contextualized by an investigation... several...

Impact of Species Extinction
...?Impact of Species Extinction In the midst of human evolution, many changes have occurred in the natural way of life of fauna and flora. Competition for resources has increased remarkably especially with increase in human population. Although human beings are mandated by nature with the responsibility of regulating the rest forms of life, there seems to be a challenge in meeting this obligation. Human beings have been the primary factor in contributing to extinction of many forms of animal and plant life. Sadly, the way in which man treats animals raises issues of ethical concern considering that animals have rights too. Despite the increased knowledge on pros and cons of species...

Dinosaurs (In Science)
..., clawed and jaws,’. So far, the remains of over 1,000 different dinosaur species have been identified from fossils though technically, birds are feathered dinosaurs, meaning dinosaurs aren't really extinct at all. The fact that some dinosaurs have been found which are feathered adds emphasis to evolutionary ideas and the hypothesis that birds are direct descendants of some dinosaurs, an idea first put forward as long ago as 1870 ( Stone 2010) brings to mind other scientific questions such as who are the predecessors of mankind. Some, although not all dinosaurs, are known as being ‘bird hipped’ because of their particular...

Dinosaurs Extinction
...Dinosaurs Extinction Over the times, scientists and historians have attempted to explore the exact cause or a chain of causes that led to the extinction of dinosaurs. A study by Michael (1) focused on a range of theories that sought to expand the understanding and points of linkages between the theories and the many school of thought that attempt to explore the depths of this historical and scientific phenomenon. The meteorite theory and the scientific theory remain some of the two most compelling explanations of the precise cause that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. The author explores both the strengths and weaknesses of these...

Mass Extinction
...Ching Wong Greathouse Biological Anthropology 20 April 2007 Is Mass Extinction Our Future A few hundred millions years ago, there was a group of huge animals living on this planet. They are known as the dinosaurs. However, they were wiped out with many other species from earth about 65 million years ago (Ananthaswamy, 2004). Their depletion was recognized as one of the mass extinctions. There were six mass extinctions identified in the last four billion years, and many scientists are expecting the seventh to happen. They called it the Holocene extinction event (Wikipedia, 2007). It is believed that about one half of the species will be depleted during...
