Lecturer One.Life: Jesus Calls, We Follow Reading Response Questions Preface What does it mean to really follow Jesus? According to McKnight, following Jesus is the only enough thing to do. He can be followed by giving in one’s own One.Life to Him as well as His dream.First Words1. Briefly describe the two ways McKnight describes to answer the big question that shapes this book. The big question can be answered by having a dream. Dreams are the only way through which God speaks to us. It also gives us a sense of hope direction on the right path to follow.2. What is the big question McKnight wants to answer in One.Life? What answer does he give on this First Words section?

The big question in this book is about the accomplishment of religious dream.Chapter 1 One.Life1. Describe in your own words what you think McKnight means when he talks about your dream. I think that McKnight means that a dream is a destiny. However, in his opinion, a good dream should be provided by God.Where do you get your dreams?Dreams come from God. It is one of the ways through which God speak to human beings.2. What is possibility overload? What does possibility overload feel like?It means burdening oneself unnecessarily.

It is undesirable and unfulfilling.3. How did John Stott answer the question how can I discern the Lords will for my life? Explain what you think his answer means?According to Stott, one can discern one’s dream by doing an activity and talent which benefits as many people as possible. Meaning, they should use their gifts in a utilitarian manner: for a common good. 4. If you could do anything with your One.Life that you could do, what would it be?I prefer to become a clergy (church minister).

It would give me an opportunity to serve God and humanity. Chapter 2 Kingdom.Life1. Explain as clearly and thoroughly as possible what Jesus meant when he spoke about kingdom? What did it mean in the minds of his listeners?By talking about kingdom, Jesus was referring to God’s dream in us. According to His teachings, Jesus held that God, as our sole creator, has planned a dream for us. However, for us to enjoy His kingdom, we need to surrender our One.Life to the dream that He has chosen for us to pursue.

However, this was not properly comprehended by His listeners who took the literal meaning of these wise teachings. 2. Describe how McKnight explains the way the Church came to reinterpret or misinterpret the idea of the kingdom?Indeed, McKnight explains that many people have misinterpreted Jesus’ teachings about the kingdom. To many Christians, it only entails going to church and reading the Bible. However, Jesus emphasized that God’s kingdom entails going beyond this and identifying a dream which has been chosen for them by God. 3. Explain the meaning of ubuntu?

What does this African term have to do with Jesus?Ubuntu is a term associated with African Traditional Religion. It means humanness. In other words, it is a spirit of kindness and togetherness. Actually, Africans were great egalitarians who believed in the kinship system, sharing and egalitarianism. I think it was supported by Jesus because He preached about generosity, love and brotherhood. 4. How does McKnight, in this chapter, begin to answer the question of what it means to be a Christian?

He does it by giving a history of his struggles. He uses his personal experiences to shed more light on this matter. After knowing that Jesus is the only good thing, he offered his One.Life to Him. 5. If you do not already know the Lords Prayer by heart, I recommend you memorize and pray it daily throughout this class on Christian Faith and Life. Write it out here in whatever version of the Bible youve been using in your study. (You can find this prayer that Jesus taught his disciples in Matthew 6: 9-13 or Luke 11: 2-4).

“Our father in heaven; May your Holy name be honored; May your kingdom come;May your will be done on earth as it is in heaven;May you give us our daily bread;Do not bring us into temptations, but keep us away from sins. Amen.” (NIV, Luke 11: 2-4).
