America: Religions and Religion “America: Religions and Religion” by Catherine L. Albanese is one textbook used by thousands of students across America to understand about the religious diversity present in the country. Being a huge country in terms of land area, America houses people coming from various different countries of the world and having different religions & beliefs. With such great diversity it is essential for people to understand and respect people who share religious beliefs which differ from their own.
This book not only gives knowledge of the various religions present in the country but also brings them to a converging point by highlighting the factors which are similar amongst all of them. I feel Ms. Albanese chose the title of her book based upon the fact that as a country America houses people coming from various religions, thereby religious tolerance needs to be created as it is highly essential for people holding different religious views to understand and respect each other. This would ensure that there is religious harmony and people respect each other and their religious sentiments (Albanese).
On a general note there are not many challenges present in the academic study of religion. However, I always believe people in schools and universities alike should be free to choose and study the religion of their choice rather than being taught about religion in general. This, I believe, would enable them to have better knowledge of the religion they want to follow. On the contrary, teaching about all religions in general rather than focusing on a specific one has its own pros and cons, and the major plus point here I believe is the fact that it allows students to understand and respect people hailing from other religions in a much better manner as they understand the reasons behind the way their religion works.
